Unimore inaugurates its 850th Academic Year with the President of Confindustria, Emanuele Orsini

Opening the event, accompanied by the Unimore Choir, was the inaugural address of Unimore’s Rector, Rita Cucchiara, during which she outlined the 2025–2031 Strategic Plan (available on the University website: www.pubblicazioni.unimore.it/MandatoCucchiara/).

“In an uncertain and rapidly changing global context, the University must remain a solid institution, rooted in its own traditions yet capable of anticipating and shaping the future. It must educate individuals able to understand complexity, adapt to change and face its challenges. The University must be the place where the future is built every day, through critical thinking, knowledge and responsibility,” stated Rector Rita Cucchiara. “Across all its missions—research, education of new generations, and collaboration with society and the productive world—our University is called to act as a driver of progress and a guardian of values, preserving the heritage of the past while generating the culture and knowledge of tomorrow. As Rector of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, this is the challenge I want to embrace together with the entire academic community. I have titled my Strategic Plan ‘innovating for legacy’: bringing digital transformation to organisational processes, defining modern, flexible and attractive teaching models, and nurturing both basic and applied research to pass on our knowledge for years to come. The Plan is addressed to the academic and student communities, to our cities and our region, with the hope of collaborating over the next six years to consolidate and relaunch the University, jointly designing—within a complex geopolitical context—the role of the territory’s oldest public institution.”

This was followed by contributions from Emanuele Terranova, President of the Student Council, who repeatedly stressed the need for funding and attention within the education system, and Francesca De Rienzo, Vice President of the Technical and Administrative Staff Assembly.

Guest of honour at the event was Emanuele Orsini, President of the Confederation of Italian Industry, who delivered a well-attended lectio magistralis on “The Competitiveness of Italian Industry in the Context of Global Challenges”.

During the ceremony, tribute was also paid to lecturers and researchers who, over the past year, have received prestigious international awards, thereby strengthening the University’s scientific reputation. A dedicated moment was also reserved for newly appointed Emeritus Professors.
