First Prize at the SIFaCT National Clinical Pharmacy Contest Awarded to Unimore Hospital Pharmacy Specialisation Students

The first prize at the SIFaCT National Clinical Pharmacy Contest has been awarded to students of the Hospital Pharmacy Specialisation School at Unimore. The winners received a travel grant to attend one of the upcoming SIFaCT 2026 events of their choice: the Infectious Diseases Network Conference, the Chronic Care Network Conference, or the Oncology Network Conference.

The specialisation students Pamela Amati Samanta, Valentina Costa, Alice Gaioni and Alessandro Magnano, enrolled in the Hospital Pharmacy Specialisation School at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, won first prize at the third edition of the SIFaCT National Clinical Pharmacy Contest, held in Turin during the SIFaCT National Congress (9–11 October 2025).

The National Clinical Pharmacy Contest, promoted by SIFaCT – Italian Society of Clinical Pharmacy and Therapeutics, was conceived as an educational and competitive initiative aimed at residents of Hospital Pharmacy and Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology Specialisation Schools.

The contest, one of the most anticipated moments of the Congress, involved young residents in a competition based on complex clinical cases. Participants worked in teams to analyse real-life pharmacotherapy scenarios, developing strategies for clinical intervention, therapy management, and patient monitoring.

The operational phases included: a preliminary written stage, in which each participating School submitted a written paper based on a clinical case, outlining therapeutic management proposals; the quarter-finals, where the eight selected teams competed head-to-head in multiple-choice quizzes in a “Jeopardy” style; the semi-finals, in which four teams faced multiple-choice quizzes and guided analysis of a clinical case; and the final, in which the two finalist teams competed in quizzes and an unguided descriptive case presentation, evaluated by a panel of four hospital pharmacists.

The winners were awarded a travel grant to attend a SIFaCT National Conference in 2026 of their choice: the Infectious Diseases Network Conference, the Chronic Care Network Conference, or the Oncology Network Conference. The award aims to recognise the dedication and expertise of the residents while encouraging participation in national scientific events.

The Hospital Pharmacy Specialisation School at Unimore is dedicated to the advanced training of pharmacists with clinical, managerial, and research skills, aiming to contribute to innovation in healthcare services. “In this context,” says Professor Giovanni Tosi, Director of the Hospital Pharmacy Specialisation School, “participation in initiatives such as the SIFaCT Contest offers a tangible opportunity to apply acquired skills, engage with young colleagues from other universities, and contribute to the growth of clinical pharmacy in Italy.”

“The achievement of Dr Amati, Dr Costa, Dr Gaioni, and Dr Magnano,” concludes Professor Tosi, “demonstrates not only individual excellence but also the quality and value of the training provided by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The four-year programme includes lectures and professional activities covering highly specific and essential areas such as pharmaceutical technology, regulations, pharmaceutics, pharmacovigilance, and pharmacoeconomics. All these aspects define the role of the Hospital Pharmacist, a central and distinctive professional figure within the hospital network, with responsibilities and expertise that contribute meaningfully to public health protection. Special thanks go to SIFaCT for organising the Contest and promoting high-level educational opportunities, and to the scientific community for providing assessments, clinical cases, and supervision to ensure the rigour of the competition.”
