Team Unimore Racing won the Indy Autonomous Challenge in Las Vegas

Coordinated by Prof. Marko Bertogna of the Department of Physics, Informatics and Mathematics, the Unimore Racing Team won the 2025 edition of the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), the competition between fully self-driving cars built by universities around the world, held on 9 January at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
The team from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia achieved an exceptional victory in the race against a dozen university teams from North America, Europe and Asia, including Berkeley, CalTech (California Institute of Technology), University of Virginia, Purdue University, KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science & Technology) and Politecnico di Milano.
In the Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC), the world's fastest autonomous racing cars compete head-to-head, thanks to artificial intelligence software developed by top universities worldwide. All IAC teams start with the same automotive and computer hardware, upon which they build their own control and autonomy stack. This competition pushes the boundaries of autonomous technology, showcasing the future of mobility.
We are very pleased with this victory, which came about in the prestigious scenario of the CES in Las Vegas, in competition with leading teams. It is the result of great teamwork and the sacrifices of the Unimore students who have brought our autonomous driving stack to the top internationally in recent years.
The Unimore Racing team consists of around twenty PhD students, researchers, students from Unimore and employees of the Hipert spinoff.
The Indy Autonomous Challenge began in October 2021. Since then, event organisers have expanded its format and university teams have set several speed records for autonomous ground vehicles. The IAC has claimed to be a testbed for cutting-edge technologies that promise to improve the autonomy of all vehicles.
The next competition involving the Unimore team will take place in April in Abu Dhabi, where the grand prix will be held at the Yas Marina circuit, with a 2.25 million prize money up for grabs.
