PhD Candidate Pietro Galimberti Wins Student Paper Competition at the 15th AIMS Conference in Athens

Pietro Galimberti, a PhD candidate in the joint Doctoral Programme in Mathematics offered by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UniMORE), the University of Ferrara and the University of Parma, has won the Student Paper Competition at the 15th AIMS Conference on Dynamical Systems, Differential Equations and Applications, organised by the American Institute of Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in Athens.

The AIMS Conference is one of the leading international events in the fields of pure and applied analysis, differential equations, dynamical systems and their applications. The 2026 edition brought together around 2,500 participants from across the world and featured an outstanding line-up of plenary speakers, including Artur Avila, Mihalis Dafermos, Qiang Du, Adam Kanigowski, Carlos Kenig, Kening Lu, Panagiotis E. Souganidis and Hong Wang.

The award recognised the paper "New Results for the Cahn–Hilliard Equation with Non-degenerate Mobility: Well-posedness and Long-time Behaviour", co-authored by Monica Conti (Politecnico di Milano), Stefania Gatti (Department of Physical, Computer and Mathematical Sciences – FIM, UniMORE) and Andrea Giorgini (Politecnico di Milano). Professor Stefania Gatti is also co-supervisor of Pietro Galimberti's PhD thesis, together with Professor Andrea Giorgini.

The achievement is all the more significant given the highly competitive nature of the Student Paper Competition. More than 50 students were admitted to the competition, but only eight were selected to present their work during the conference. Their presentations were evaluated by a panel of internationally renowned scholars.

"It is extremely rewarding to see Pietro's research recognised at an international level. This achievement demonstrates the ability of our Doctoral Programme to attract and support talented young researchers, providing them with a highly stimulating academic environment in which to develop their work. The Analysis group at UniMORE is distinguished by both its scientific excellence and its strong international outlook, and this prestigious award is an important recognition of both. It also marks the culmination of a long-standing and fruitful collaboration with Monica Conti, as well as a more recent one with Andrea Giorgini at Politecnico di Milano," said Professor Stefania Gatti of UniMORE's Department of Physical, Computer and Mathematical Sciences.

During the award ceremony, Pietro Galimberti received the prize from mathematician Mihalis Dafermos, one of the plenary speakers at the 2026 edition of the conference.

"It is a great honour to receive this award from AIMS in recognition of the research I have carried out during my PhD. I would like to thank everyone who has contributed to this project and made this important achievement possible," said Pietro Galimberti.
