UNIMORE Awards Stefano Landi an Honorary Master’s Degree in Mechatronic Engineering

The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (UNIMORE) today awarded an honorary Master’s Degree in Mechatronic Engineering to Stefano Landi, entrepreneur from Reggio Emilia, Chairman of Landi Renzo S.p.A., and President of the Emilia Chamber of Commerce.

The ceremony was held in the Aula Magna of the Digital Campus, located in Building 15C of the Reggiane Innovation Park, in the presence of Rector Rita Cucchiara, Elena Degoli, Director of the Department of Engineering Sciences and Methods, Fabio Immovilli, Head of the Degree Programme in Mechatronic Engineering, together with academics, public authorities, and representatives from the institutional, economic, and academic sectors.

The honour followed a proposal by the Department of Engineering Sciences and Methods, which identified Stefano Landi as a leading figure in the development of mechatronics applied to mobility, in the international growth of an industrial group deeply rooted in the Reggio Emilia area, and in his contribution to the economic, cultural, and civic life of the local community.

After opening remarks from Rector Rita Cucchiara, Elena Degoli read the official motivation for the award. Fabio Immovilli then introduced the recipient and delivered the laudatio before the formal conferral of the degree and Stefano Landi’s Lectio Magistralis.

“Stefano Landi,” said Rector Rita Cucchiara, “has brought expertise developed in Reggio Emilia into the international mobility supply chain through work requiring strategic vision, market awareness, and a constant relationship with applied research. This honorary Master’s Degree recognises a story in which industry has generated both technological innovation and highly qualified employment. For UNIMORE, it also sends an important message to students: scientific knowledge gains value when it engages with complex systems and contributes to the development of the community from which it originated.”

“The awarding of this Honorary Degree to Stefano Landi,” said Elena Degoli, “celebrates an industrial history that has played a defining role in the evolution of mechatronics in our region. His ability to combine innovation with internationalisation has helped establish our local area as a centre of excellence with global significance. Beyond the cyclical transformations of international markets, the University wishes to recognise an entrepreneurial culture capable of anticipating the challenges of sustainable mobility, offering a model of expertise and vision for future generations of engineers.”

“Stefano Landi,” added Fabio Immovilli, “was a pioneer in the integration of mechanics and electronics, leading the technological transition towards sustainable mobility from aftermarket systems to complex OEM supplies for the world’s leading automotive manufacturers. This honorary degree in Mechatronic Engineering recognises the career of an entrepreneur who transformed experimentation into both an industrial and civic mission, promoting a model of development in which industrial excellence, internationalisation, and responsibility towards the community advance together.”

Born in Reggio Emilia on 30 June 1958, Stefano Landi joined the family business, Landi Renzo S.p.A., in 1981. The company had been founded in 1954 by his father, Renzo Landi. From the outset, he played a leading role in the group’s international expansion, becoming Chief Executive Officer in 1987 and Chairman in 2010. Listed on the Milan Stock Exchange since 2007, the company now operates in more than 50 countries in the field of gas and hydrogen fuel systems for vehicles.

Alongside his entrepreneurial career, Landi has also held prominent roles in the institutional and civic life of the region. He served as President of Pallacanestro Reggiana from 2001 to 2021, President of Reggio Emilia Innovazione from 2003 to 2011, and as a member of the UNIMORE Board of Directors from 2012 to 2020. From 2014 to 2020 he was President of the Reggio Emilia Chamber of Commerce, and in July 2023 he was unanimously elected President of the Emilia Chamber of Commerce, the largest chamber of commerce organisation in the Emilia-Romagna region.

Long committed to social and cultural initiatives, Landi Renzo S.p.A. supports several medical research associations as well as numerous charitable projects. A member of Rotary International and Panathlon, Stefano Landi is widely regarded as a leading figure in innovative and socially responsible entrepreneurship in the region.
