Artificial Intelligence: Modena to host the European meeting of the ELLIOT project on multimodal generative models

The ELLIS (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems) Unit in Modena will host the meeting of the European project ELLIOT from 11 to 13 March at the Enzo Ferrari Department of Engineering of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia (Unimore). The project focuses on the development of Multimodal Generalist Foundation Models (MGFM)artificial intelligence systems capable of learning general knowledge from vast amounts of heterogeneous data, including video, images, text, signals from industrial sensors, complex time series and satellite feeds.
For three days, researchers from universities, research centres and European companies will come together to discuss the projects scientific progress, address technical challenges and plan the next phases of development.
The ELLIOT project brings together a consortium of leading European institutions, including Unimore, CINECA and numerous other academic and industrial partners. The initiative is dedicated to the development and advancement of multimodal generative models (MGFM), through large-scale research activities and a responsible approach to innovation in the field of artificial intelligence.
A central aspect of the project is the promotion of trustworthy artificial intelligence. ELLIOT places particular emphasis on the principles of transparency, fairness, explainability and robustness of AI systems, while also promoting green AI practices aimed at reducing energy consumption.
The meeting in Modena represents a key moment for the ELLIOT consortium: an opportunity to assess the results achieved so far, align the next technical milestones and strengthen collaboration among European partners working on the development of the next generation of artificial intelligence technologies, commented Professor Lorenzo Baraldi, who is coordinating the event.
The conference will conclude on Friday 13 March with the inauguration of Unimores new AI Centre at the Modena Technopole. The event marks an important milestone in the multi-year project and is particularly significant for the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, as it establishes a dedicated area within the Enzo Ferrari Department of Engineering entirely focused on Artificial Intelligence.
The initiative has been made possible thanks to co-funding from the Emilia-Romagna Region, the Italian Ministry of University and Research, and support from Italys National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) and European projects, under the auspices of Confindustria Emilia and the European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems (ELLIS).
ELLIS is a European scientific network whose mission is to promote excellence in research and foster innovation in artificial intelligence, as well as to train the next generation of researchers in this field through a broad pan-European doctoral programme. ELLIS currently comprises 39 laboratories (ELLIS Units) across 14 European countries, dedicated to research on machine learning and intelligent systems.
