Unimore launches academic courses in Mirandola: first lessons of the Bioengineering for Innovation in Medicine programme at Polo Il Pico

Unimore is launching academic courses in Mirandola as part of the Bioengineering for Innovation in Medicine programme, Biomedical Devices curriculum, with a ceremony scheduled for Monday 27 October 2025 at 10:30 a.m. at the Polo Culturale Il Pico.

The initiative arises from an agreement between the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, the Municipality of Mirandola, the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Mirandola, and the Unione Comuni Modenesi Area Nord, with the support of the Emilia-Romagna Region.

The ceremony will be attended by the Mayor of Mirandola, Letizia Budri; Rector Carlo Adolfo Porro; UCMAN President Claudio Poletti; Regional Commission V Chair Maria Costi; and President of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Mirandola Francesco Vincenzi. Speakers will include Professor Jonathan Mapelli, Unimore programme coordinator, and Giuliana Gavioli from ITS Biomedicale.

The Master’s Degree in Bioengineering for Innovation in Medicine is jointly organised with the Universities of Trento and Verona, with administrative headquarters in Modena, and is part of the Department of Biomedical, Metabolic and Neural Sciences, in collaboration with the Enzo Ferrari Department of Engineering. The programme trains professionals capable of working in diagnostics, therapy, and healthcare technologies, with advanced skills in the design and development of biomedical devices.

The 95% increase in enrolments recorded in 2025 confirms the strong interest in a unique national educational offering, built on collaboration between universities, local authorities, and the industrial system.

Lessons in Mirandola are governed by an agreement granting Unimore access to certain spaces at the Polo Culturale Il Pico, provided by the Municipality for teaching activities. A further agreement is being finalised to regulate the use of classrooms and laboratories at ITS Biomedicale, within a framework of collaboration between the university system, technical education, and the biomedical district’s industrial sector.

“This step has concrete value for us, beyond the symbolic,” emphasises Unimore Rector Carlo Adolfo Porro. “It means bringing university education to a territory that has represented a leading industrial and scientific reality for decades. The aim is to create real connections between research, industry, and teaching, so that students can find a fertile environment for growth here. Unimore’s presence in Mirandola is part of a long-term project, shared with institutions and the industrial world, to build a network of skills that meets the innovation and healthcare needs of a district looking to the future.”

“The launch of the Bioengineering for Innovation in Medicine programme at Polo Culturale Il Pico,” comments Mayor Letizia Budri, “represents an extraordinary milestone for Mirandola and the entire North Area. It is the result of a virtuous collaboration between institutions, the University, and the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Mirandola, who with vision, commitment, and a sense of community have made a project possible that combines education, research, and development. This new university programme strengthens the deep link between the territory and its biomedical district, an internationally recognised engine of innovation and excellence. It will offer young people new growth opportunities and help reinforce the competitiveness and know-how that have always distinguished our area.”

“It is an investment in the future and in people,” concludes the Mayor, “a significant step for a community that believes in knowledge, research, and learning as drivers of progress and sustainable development.”

The Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Mirandola,” emphasises its President Francesco Vincenzi, “supported the establishment of the Degree Programme in Medical Systems Engineering for the Person in Mirandola, with the awareness that the quality and effectiveness of education, instruction, and training are crucial for the socio-economic development of the community in the North Area of Modena. These areas are essential for personal development, social integration, and employability of new generations.”

“The Foundation places young people and their education at the centre of its activities, and considers scientific knowledge indispensable for the development of the territory and the growth of the community,” continues Francesco Vincenzi. “The University plays a decisive role in this regard, as an essential tool for the transmission of knowledge and the production of new understanding. In light of these considerations, the synergy with UNIMORE is not only confirmed with the inauguration of the 2025/2026 academic year but further strengthened, thanks to an extraordinary funding commitment by the Foundation for the next fifteen years.”

At the end of the ceremony, the university pavilion will be named in honour of Alcide De Gasperi.
