Unimore and AOU Modena Dedicate a Day to Childhood Cancer: Prevention, Diagnosis, and Care Networks at the Heart of the September 20 Conference

On Saturday, September 20, the Aula Magna of the Medical Services Center at the Modena Polyclinic will host the conference “Prevention and Treatment of Childhood Cancer: UNIMORE-AOU Modena Serving the Community and Scientific Research.” The event will gather clinicians, researchers, and representatives from the volunteer sector to review epidemiology, diagnosis, treatment, and care networks in pediatric oncology, with a particular—but not exclusive—focus on the Modena and Reggio Emilia context. The conference is part of the celebrations marking the 850th anniversary of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia.

The program will begin at 9:00 a.m. with an introduction by Marco Vinceti, epidemiologist and Director of the Department of Biomedical, Metabolic, and Neuroscience Sciences at Unimore, and Giovanni Palazzi, pediatric oncohematologist at AOU Modena. Institutional greetings from Unimore and the Modena Health Authorities will follow, with presentations starting at 9:30 a.m. Catherine Metayer, epidemiologist at the University of Berkeley and former President of the International Childhood Cancer and Leukemia Consortium (CLIC)—which includes 21 research units, including Unimore—will deliver a talk on the causes of the most common pediatric cancer, childhood leukemia, entitled “Integrative Environmental and Molecular Epidemiology of Childhood Leukemia.” This will be followed by a presentation from Angela Mastronuzzi, pediatric oncologist at Bambino Gesù Hospital in Rome and President of the Italian Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology (AIEOP), on the latest diagnostic and therapeutic advances in these diseases.

After a musical interlude, the focus will shift to local contributions—Unimore, AOU Modena, AUSL Modena, and AUSL Reggio Emilia—to childhood cancer research. Tommaso Filippini and Marcella Malavolti (BMN Unimore) will discuss evidence on the causes of childhood cancers identified in the Modena-Reggio Emilia area, while Alessia Pancaldi and Giovanni Palazzi (AOU Modena Polyclinic) will present the network model of Modena’s pediatric oncohematology services. Erio Bagni, President of ASEOP Modena, will deliver the closing talk on the fundamental role of volunteer associations in supporting care and research in childhood cancer, with particular attention to the Modena and Reggio Emilia context. A discussion session will follow, with the conference scheduled to conclude at 1:00 p.m.

After years of close scientific and clinical collaboration in the field of childhood cancer between the Oncohematology Unit of the Modena Polyclinic and Public Health at Unimore/AUSL Modena-Reggio Emilia, we felt the need to share the latest progress with families, the local community, and interested professionals advances that can significantly improve our capacity for prevention and treatment of these diseases. We are very grateful to all the speakers for contributing their expertise and to ASEOP for supporting this event and, more broadly, research and care for childhood cancers over the years,” commented Prof. Vinceti.

The conference will take place at the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery’s Service Center in Modena.
