MoRe Modena Racing Team Secures Second Place at Formula Student Austria

Once again, Unimore played a leading role on the international Formula Student stage, thanks to the second-place result achieved by the MoRe Modena Racing team on the RedBull Ring circuit in Zeltweg, Austria.

On the track, the hybrid biofuel vehicle excelled during the competition, winning the Acceleration event and, most notably, the Endurance race, alongside podium finishes in other dynamic events such as Skidpad, Autocross and Efficiency. To this, a prestigious podium in the static Engineering Design event was added. These achievements enabled the team to secure an overall second place in the event.

This outstanding result reaffirms MoRe Modena Racing among the top teams in the global Formula Student scene, confirming the excellent performances seen last season, which saw the team take home three victories.

Supported by the Fondazione di Modena and the Emilia-Romagna Region, the MoRe Modena Racing team from the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia brought an extremely innovative vehicle to the track: a hybrid car featuring a biofuel-powered combustion engine (E85) at the rear and two electric motors mounted directly within the front wheel hubs.

“This result marks a highly prestigious milestone not only for our students, but for the entire University and the city of Modena,” said Professor Francesco Leali, Director of the Department of Engineering "Enzo Ferrari". “The students have shown, through commitment, creativity and an innovative spirit, that they can compete and succeed on the international stage. It is clear proof that investing in high-quality education and research consistently brings great results. As Director, I consider it an honour to host the team’s main activities in our Department, which involves more than 200 students also from other Departments within the University, such as the Department of Sciences and Methods for Engineering, the Department of Economics 'Marco Biagi', the Department of Physics, Computer Science and Mathematics, the Department of Communication and Economics, and the Department of Life Sciences. This project is a virtuous example of multidisciplinary collaboration and shared passion.”

The project’s Faculty Advisors, Professors Matteo Giacopini and Valerio Mangeruga, echoed this sentiment: “This achievement by our students is the result of months of tireless work—nights spent designing, producing and testing the vehicle in pursuit of continuous improvement. This result is a full reward for the dedication, passion and determination each student has demonstrated, and confirms the quality reached by this educational project, based on the Learning by Doing model.”

Still visibly emotional, Team Leader Gianmarco Guzzo commented: “It was important for us to confirm the high standard our team has achieved over the past few years, but above all, we were called upon to defend the number 1 we earned last year. Every team member gave their all from the moment we arrived, and thanks to their skill and dedication, we were able to fight for the win right up to the final breath. We are thrilled with this second-place finish, which gives us the right momentum to do even better in the upcoming events in Croatia in mid-August and in Italy at the beginning of September.”

Formula Student is Europe’s most established educational engineering competition, which in 2025 celebrated its 27th anniversary. Backed by leading industry figures and renowned engineers, the competition aims to foster enterprising and innovative young engineers, encouraging more and more students to pursue a career in engineering. Each year, over one hundred university teams from around the world take part.

Participation in Formula Student represents a significant opportunity offered to students as part of their academic journey and is recognised by the automotive industry as an added value that greatly facilitates their transition from university to the professional world.
