Erasmus+ Agreement Signed between Unimore and the University of Seville

This new agreement marks another step in the evolving partnership between Unimore and the University of Seville, which has already led to numerous joint initiatives, particularly through the dynamic collaboration between their Law Departments. These departments have long hosted recurring scientific and research events.
The Framework Agreement for academic, scientific, and cultural collaboration was originally signed by the two universities in February 2022.
Within this framework, the collaboration between the two Law Departments was formalised in March 2023 through an agreement that includes the development of joint research and training projects, the organisation of academic events, the publication of scientific materials, and a personnel exchange programme, with particular attention to early-career researchers.
At Unimore, a key driving force behind this partnership has been the CRID Interdepartmental Research Centre on Discrimination and Vulnerability, established in 2016 by Professors Gianfrancesco Zanetti and Thomas Casadei, the latter currently serving as Director. At the University of Seville, the essential point of reference has been the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Fernando H. Llano Alonso.
The intensity and regularity of joint academic and research activities between Modena and Seville are demonstrated by various initiatives under the banner of the Modena-Seville Dialogues (for the full list of events: https://www.crid.unimore.it/site/home/attivita/seminari/colloqui-modena-sevilla/articolo1065067154.html). These are regular opportunities for dialogue and exchange among young scholars from both institutions, co-directed by Professor Fernando Llano Alonso (Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Seville) and Professor Thomas Casadei (Director of CRID - Unimore).
This collaboration has also extended to doctoral education, linking the PhD programme in Humanities, Technology and Society (Unimore, Fondazione Collegio San Carlo di Modena, Almo Collegio Borromeo of Pavia) with the DocDerDus PhD programme at the University of Seville. Together, they have launched an international series of doctoral seminars under the theme New Technologies, Ethics, Culture, and Society. The first seminar, titled AI and Digitalisation: Applications, Challenges, Opportunities, was held from 67 February 2025 at the University of Seville. The outcomes of this conference were published in the recent issue of the journal Ius et Scientia (https://revistascientificas.us.es/index.php/ies). The next seminar is scheduled to take place in Modena in February 2026.
The signing of this latest Erasmus+ agreement is also part of a broader internationalisation effort by Unimore, which on 31 January 2025 also signed an important memorandum of understanding involving the CRID Interdepartmental Research Centre on Discrimination and Vulnerability (Unimore), the Centre for Biomedical Law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra, and the Faculty of Law at the University of Seville. The signing took place at the Faculty of Law of the University of Coimbra (FDUC).
The agreement was preceded by a roundtable discussion titled Ethics and the Right to Health: The Challenges of New Technologies in Southern Europe, which included contributions from Professor Thomas Casadei (Director of CRID at Unimore and former Visiting Professor at the University of Seville), Professor André Gonçalo Dias Pereira (President of the Centre for Biomedical Law; Vice-President of the Portuguese National Council for Ethics in the Life Sciences CNECV), Professor Fernando Llano-Alonso (Dean of the Faculty of Law at the University of Seville and Professor of Legal Philosophy), and Professor Sandra Passinhas (Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Law, University of Coimbra, and Professor at FDUC).
Representatives of both universities expressed their satisfaction with the new agreement.
Professor Carmelo Elio Tavilla, Director of the Department of Law at Unimore, stated:
"We are particularly pleased with this new milestone in our collaboration with the University of Seville. The Erasmus+ agreement offers a tangible opportunity to intensify our joint work in research and teaching, positively impacting student education and enhancing the quality of our scientific output. I would like to thank Professor Fernando H. Llano Alonso for his pivotal role in promoting this initiative, as well as the CRID for its essential contribution in shaping such a far-reaching partnership."
From the University of Seville, the Dean of the Faculty of Law, Professor Fernando H. Llano Alonso, commented:
"This agreement marks a historic moment in the internationalisation of our Faculty, and it would not have been possible without the commitment and collaboration of Professors Carmelo Elio Tavilla, Gianfrancesco Zanetti, Thomas Casadei, and Luigi Foffani, who, along with Professor Manuel García Mayo, our Vice-Dean for International Relations and Mobility, oversaw the agreements details. This Erasmus+ agreement strengthens a productive scientific partnership between our institutions, which has already taken shape through the co-organisation of seminars and conferences on crucial topics such as AI ethics, vulnerability, bioethics, and the history of legal thought. We look forward to welcoming students, lecturers, and researchers from Unimore to Seville."
Professor Luigi Foffani, coordinator of Unimores PhD in Legal Studies, concluded:
"This agreement further confirms the international outlook of our university and the significant potential of legal studies in this contextfor example, in the fields of research on discrimination and vulnerability, the new frontiers of legal informatics and bioethics, and the intersections between artificial intelligence and law. These are areas in which the CRID has been active for many years. This agreement consolidates a long-standing partnership with our colleagues at the University of Seville, led by Professor Fernando H. Llano Alonso, with whom we share a common vision of the vital importance of transnational research and education."
