The More Modena Racing Team from Unimore Unveils the New M25-LH Car for the 2025 Formula Student Season

This year, the Unimore team has focused its efforts on the MMR Hybrid project which, as the name suggests, involves the development and fine-tuning of a hybrid single-seater.
The M25-LH is not simply an update of previous models but a radical redesign, conceived from scratch to meet the technical and regulatory challenges of the upcoming season with a completely new construction philosophy. Its a project that embodies the teams growth and vision, constantly evolving and surpassing itself year after year.
The car is powered by a second-generation bioethanol blend, significantly reducing CO₂ emissions and making the internal combustion engine a truly sustainable alternative. This is complemented by a hybrid system designed to maximise the prototypes overall efficiency.
The M25-LH hybrid prototype is built on a carbon-fibre monocoque chassis weighing less than 18 kg. It features an optimised lamination design that integrates all the main subsystems while minimising weight.
The powertrain consists of a 708 cc internal combustion engine running on E85 ethanol, fitted with new high-compression pistons to enhance output, responsiveness, and efficiency. A key contribution comes from the Department of Life Sciences, which played a vital role in developing the second-generation bioethanol. This sustainable fuel is derived from non-food biomass, such as agricultural waste or plant residues, avoiding competition with food crops. Though its production process is more complex than that of traditional ethanol, it results in a low environmental impact fuel, offering a viable alternative to fossil fuels.
At the core of this years innovation lies the refinement of the hybrid system first introduced last season, which pairs the combustion engine with two electric motors integrated into the front wheels.
Thanks to rigorous development and optimisation work, the system is now more efficient, compact, and high-performing. The result is an even more competitive vehicle, with a total output exceeding 100 hp and a weight kept below 220 kg, aligning with current motorsport challenges of electrification and sustainability.
The technical package is completed by an advanced aerodynamic system made from composite materials, capable of generating over 2200 N of downforce at 100 km/h, along with a push-rod suspension at the rear and a pull-rod setup at the front, both fully adjustable. Additionally, flexible wishbones and front brake callipers made of titanium have been developed.
More Modena Racing, the official Formula Student team of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, was founded in 2003 and currently includes over 200 active students from various faculties, including engineering, economics, science, communication, and more. Their shared goal is to apply academic knowledge to a tangible challenge: designing, building, and racing a high-performance single-seater all while maintaining a strong focus on one of todays most pressing issues: environmental sustainability.
The teams organisational structure mirrors that of a professional racing outfit, with a clearly defined technical and management hierarchy. Team operations are led by Team Leader Gianmarco Guzzo, while technical activities are overseen by Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Filippo Pierannunzio.
Within the team, work is divided into functional divisions that collaborate closely and focus on specific areas of the car. Each department is managed by a Division Leader responsible for daily operations and achieving technical goals. This model allows students to fully develop their specialised skills within a dynamic, educational environment where theory meets practice. It also provides the opportunity to apply Learning by Doing techniques, enriching both the technical and personal growth of future engineers.
With great pride we celebrate the achievements of our students, who, through dedication and commitment, have successfully completed the hybrid prototype that will compete this season, said Professor Matteo Giacopini, the projects Faculty Advisor. This is a major milestone, but just the beginning of a journey still full of challenges. The races will be a demanding proving ground, but the knowledge of the work done and progress already made marks a significant first success. The project, born of a synergy between diverse skill sets, stands as a concrete example of effective collaboration between university and industry where education, applied research, and innovation merge into an initiative that creates value for both the region and the environment.
The 2025 Formula Student season will see the MMR team on track from July to September, participating in several European championship events. The season will kick off in Austria from 20 to 24 July at Formula Student Austria, continue in Croatia from 11 to 16 August at Formula Student Alpe Adria, and conclude at Formula SAE Italy, taking place in Varano de Melegari from 10 to 14 September.
