"Stories on the Move": the Seventh National Conference on Public History in Modena

Modena will host the seventh National Conference of the Italian Association of Public History from 3 to 6 June. The event is organised in collaboration with the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and the Historical Institute of Modena. The theme chosen for the 2025 edition, Stories on the Move, draws attention to the spaces and audiences of history, not only academic ones, but also everyday and participatory ones such as streets, squares, kitchens, paths, factories and theatres.
These will be days of living history, brought to life by the participation of many associations, libraries, archives, museums, cultural institutions, as well as through games, collective experiences, and convivial moments.
The opening day, 3 June, will be entirely dedicated to education, featuring sessions showcasing projects by students from schools across Italy, along with two round tables.
Later that day, at 6 pm, the urban game Modena and the Prophecy of Time (organised by PopHistory ETS) will take place.
In the following days, the Conference will offer a packed schedule of events.
In lecture halls, sessions and round tables will see numerous public historians engaging in dialogue. Elsewhere, history will become a space for public engagement and will move into new contexts: into the kitchen with
Ragù. Networks and Archives of Taste
(with Mila Fumini and Alessia Morabito, 4 June at 1 pm); onto the stage with
Sacred Metamorphoses
, a performance by Alessandro Vanoli about religious conversions (San Carlo Theatre, 4 June at 8 pm); to the gaming table, with the Games Space and a thematic round table (afternoon of 5 June); into feminist cities (also on the afternoon of 5 June); and finally onto television, with a conversation between Marcello Ravveduto and Marco Damilano (6 June at 1.30 pm).
The event is also supported by the Municipality of Modena, the San Carlo College Foundation, and a network of organisations and institutions, including the Italian Library Association, the National Institute for Documentation, Innovation and Educational Research (INDIRE), and the Interuniversity Centre for Public History Research and Development (CISPH).
The initiative is further backed by media partners Rai Cultura and Rai Storia.
