Summer School “Digital Humanities and Digital Communication: Integrating traditional and innovative tools” kicks off

The seventh edition of the Summer School “Digital Humanities and Digital Communication: Integrating traditional and innovative tools” will take place from 3 to 6 June, organised by the Department of Linguistic and Cultural Studies at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, in collaboration with the Marco Biagi Foundation and the Interdepartmental Research Centre on Digital Humanities, DHMoRe.

The rapid introduction of new technologies has brought significant transformations to the landscape of research and communication. At the same time, while artificial intelligence and machine learning, through deep neural networks, are enhancing data analysis and automation, human expertise remains essential for data interpretation, ensuring data representativeness and avoiding bias.

These are the central themes of the seventh edition of the Summer School “Digital Humanities and Digital Communication: Integrating traditional and innovative tools”, organised by the Department of Linguistic and Cultural Studies at Unimore from 3 to 6 June as part of the PhD Programme in Humanities, in collaboration with the Marco Biagi Foundation and the Interdepartmental Research Centre on Digital Humanities (DHMoRe). The programme will explore how these approaches can complement rather than compete with one another.

Sponsored by the Italian Association of English Studies (AIA), the Summer School will take place in person at the Department of Studies on Language and Culture at Unimore. It will focus on the challenges and opportunities of integrating traditional methods with innovative tools, covering topics ranging from digital resources for humanities research to the use of new IT technologies for data analysis. Forty-eight PhD candidates and early-career researchers from both Italian and international universities will take part in the initiative.

The Summer School will open on the morning of Tuesday, 3 June with institutional greetings from Professor Davide Mazzi, Director of the Department of Linguistic and Cultural Studies, Professor Laura Gavioli, Director of the PhD Programme in Humanities, Professor Matteo Al Kalak, Director of the Interdepartmental Research Centre on Digital Humanities (DHMoRe), and Professor Marina Bondi, Scientific Director of the Summer School.

The programme will continue with a rich schedule of lectures and workshops led by internationally renowned scholars, who will share their research perspectives, guide participants’ reflections, and provide feedback on the projects presented.

The Summer School will offer an opportunity to engage with cutting-edge tools in the field of digital humanities, while reflecting on their ethical and methodological implications.

As Professor Bondi points out,”‘Participants will have the opportunity to hear from internationally recognised experts on digital topics, engage with them in workshop settings, and present their own work in dedicated sessions. There will be 18 presentations and several poster sessions in which PhD candidates and early-career researchers from different countries and universities can present their research projects and exchange ideas on themes related to Digital Humanities and digital communication, laying the groundwork for future research collaborations.’”
