At the Department of Education and Human Sciences, the Conference ITE lectio est
The Multidisciplinary Centre for Teacher Education and the Department of Education and Humanities (DESU) at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia which is coordinating and hosting the event at Viale Timavo 93, Reggio Emilia together with ANFIS (National Association of Teacher Trainers and Supervisors) and the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, Department for University Affairs, are organising the conference ITE (lectio est) Training for the Teaching Profession in Secondary Education , taking place on 9 and 10 May 2025.
The initiative, promoted by the Multidisciplinary Centre for Teacher Education, aims both to serve as a significant training opportunity for students currently beginning the 30- and 36-credit courses (CFUs) necessary to gain permanent access to the teaching profession, and to open up to the wider community. The goal is to launch and promote a debate on secondary education, engaging universities, schools, and civil society with the hope that this dialogue will continue through further initiatives, opportunities for in-depth study, and collaborative discussions. The Centre aspires to become a hub of the cultural and pedagogical movement expected to emerge around the current state of the teaching profession, thereby establishing itself as a reference point in the still-evolving field of secondary teacher education.
The collaboration with the Municipality of Reggio Emilia and ANFIS, a key partner in this initiative, marks the beginning of a broader network of partnerships with organisations that share similar visions and intentions.
The title of the conference plays on the linguistic overlap between the English acronym ITE (Initial Teacher Education) and the Latin phrase lectio est, in order to address, at a particularly pivotal moment namely, the transition from the first to the second phase of teacher training the theme of training for the teaching profession in secondary schools. This profession is characterised by a set of elements and factors that define learning environments, where physical and conceptual spaces, knowledge content, and networks of relationships (between people and between people and objects) are all key to the processes of sharing and co-constructing knowledge.
The conference will span two days Friday afternoon and Saturday morning with three sessions and a concluding roundtable discussion. Sessions will be chaired by Roberto Neulichedl, Councillor for Environmental Protection and University Affairs for the Municipality of Reggio Emilia; Professor Annamaria Contini, Director of the Department of Education and Human Sciences; and Professor Chiara Bertolini, Chair of the Degree Course in Primary Education. The roundtable discussion will be facilitated by Riccardo Scaglioni, President of ANFIS. A wide range of speakers will engage in dialogue about the types of knowledge, culture, and shared professional growth rooted in dialogue, reflection, and the integration of theory and practice that can be promoted and developed in the future.
The first session on Friday afternoon, The Teaching Profession: What Kind of Learning Environments?, will include contributions from Gianni Nuti of the University of Aosta and Mayor of Aosta; Paolo Bernardi, Director of the Local Education Authority Office in Reggio Emilia USR Emilia Romagna; Sabina Langer, Pedagogue at Inter-Azioni.eu and A. Langer Stiftung Foundation; and Giorgio Zanetti of UniMORE.
The second session, The Teaching Profession: The Role Within/Of the School, starting at 4:45 pm, will include contributions from Maurizio Berni, Headteacher and former teaching placement supervisor; Riccardo Scaglioni, President of ANFIS; and Alessandra Anceschi, secondary school teacher and coordinating tutor.
Saturday morning will feature the third session, The Teaching Profession: What Mission?, with speakers Luigina Mortari (University of Verona), Marco Dallari (Pedagogue), Stefania Lorenzini (University of Bologna), and Federico Zannoni (UniMORE).
The final roundtable discussion, The Teaching Profession: Current Status and Future Perspectives, will feature Annamaria Contini (UniMORE), Marco Dallari (Pedagogue), Maurizio Berni (Headteacher), Giuseppe Bagni (former President of CIDI), and Cinzia Ruozzi (ADI Association of Italianists and former teaching placement supervisor).
The initiative, organised by a qualified institution for teacher training, entitles both teachers and school leaders to exemption from service duties. Participation requires registration via the following link: https://forms.gle/Q3C1uGfGxiNzJpg46. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance for a recognised training activity accredited by the Ministry of Education and Merit (MIM), valid for 8 hours.
Students enrolled in the degree programmes of the Department of Education and Human Sciences who attend the conference and submit a short reflective report will be awarded 1 CFU as an elective activity. The report, consisting of personal reflections inspired by the conference, must be no more than two pages long and submitted by 21 May 2025 to Professor Federico Zannoni (federico.zannoni@unimore.it).
The purpose of the Multidisciplinary Centre for Teacher Education at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia is to launch and coordinate initial teacher education pathways for future secondary school teachers, ensuring educational and organisational coherence with the relevant subject areas.
