In Modena, a Discussion on the Challenges of Artificial Intelligence in Precision Diagnosis: Innovation and Ethical Implications

As part of the European CoMPaSS-NMD project, Unimore, in collaboration with UILDM the Italian Union for the Fight against Muscular Dystrophy, which is celebrating its 45th anniversary and Deep Blue (a project partner), is organising the event Precision Diagnosis and Artificial Intelligence for Patients with Neuromuscular Disorders: New Tools and New Opportunities , scheduled for Saturday 10 May from 10:00 to 16:00 at the Chamber of Commerce of Modena (Sala Leonelli).
The event, involving clinicians, patients, ethicists, researchers, and AI experts, will offer an opportunity to present the progress of CoMPaSS-NMD, a cutting-edge pilot project that seeks to revolutionise the diagnosis of hereditary neuromuscular disorders (HNMD) through a multidisciplinary approach and advanced artificial intelligence techniques.
The meeting also aims to foster a stimulating public debate on the ethics of AI in medicine and explore how AI represents a valuable opportunity to enhance diagnosis in neuromuscular diseases, while also contributing to the broader discussion around patient data use.
Thanks to CoMPaSS-NMD, Unimore will launch an integrated outpatient clinic offering patients access to a multidisciplinary team of specialists, enabling more comprehensive and timely care.
Rossella Tupler, project coordinator and geneticist at Unimore, stated:
Patients are at the heart of CoMPaSS, and the opportunity to engage directly with them and their families is an added value for a type of medicine that is close to people and tailored to their needs.
A key moment in the event will be the discussion on ethics and artificial intelligence a subject of growing importance in modern medicine. Experts and attendees will have the chance to engage in dialogue about the challenges and opportunities posed by AI in precision diagnostics, as well as the need to ensure that both doctors and patients feel confident and comfortable using this technology.
Stefano Bonelli, Head of Innovative Human Factors at Deep Blue, commented:
This event is a valuable opportunity to meet with doctors who will use the new AI-based system in their daily diagnostic and therapeutic practice. It is a chance to focus in particular on the critical aspects of this new approach, such as safety, transparency, and accountability in the use of patient data. Understanding their concerns about entrusting such sensitive data to our databases will help us improve project communication and ensure it addresses their questions.
The programme also includes a session dedicated to listening to patient needs and reflecting on the importance of their involvement in research.
For the Italian Union for the Fight against Muscular Dystrophy, which will mark its 45th anniversary in 2025 by reaffirming its commitment to inclusion, awareness, and the active engagement of people with muscular dystrophy in decisions about their health, President Franca Barbieri emphasised: Connecting research with the everyday lives of patients is the most authentic and meaningful way to celebrate the 45th anniversary of UILDM Modena and this important milestone.
