Presentation of the GreenTrace Project at the Modena Chamber of Commerce

Ensuring authenticity and quality is becoming increasingly important for enhancing the value of food products, protecting consumers, and combating food fraud. In this context, the Modena Chamber of Commerce will host the GreenTrace project presentation on Tuesday, 1 April, at 11:00 am. Funded by the University Research Fund with support from the Modena Foundation, the project highlights the importance of safeguarding the authenticity of Italys finest food products.
Led by Professor Caterina Durante from the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, GreenTrace introduces an innovative approach that combines eco-friendly analytical methods, machine learning algorithms, and an advanced data management system.
The goal is to develop reliable scientific tools that can support regulatory bodies and Protection Consortia in verifying the authenticity of high-value products, such as Modena PGI Balsamic Vinegar, Modena PDO Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, and Italian honey. Using advanced fingerprinting techniques, spectroscopy, and volatilomics, combined with smart predictive models, GreenTrace aims to create an objective and sustainable systemaligned with green chemistry principlesto determine the geographical origin of honey samples and the ageing of balsamic vinegars.
Another key innovation is the development of a centralised database for collecting and managing analytical data, created in collaboration with Professor Lauro Pos research team at Unimore. Additionally, consumers will be able to directly access analysis results via dedicated QR codes, ensuring greater transparency and trust.
"GreenTrace is a game-changer for the food industry. It not only aims to strengthen high-quality production chains and enhance the competitiveness of Italian products in global markets but also to support existing food protection systems with objective, cutting-edge scientific analysis and digital toolsensuring greater transparency, traceability, and consumer confidence," says Professor Durante.
The project brings together key players in the sector, including the Central Inspectorate for the Protection of Quality and the Prevention of Food Fraud, the Protection Consortium for Modena PGI Balsamic Vinegar, the Protection Consortium for Modena PDO Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, and various industry enterprises.
