Two Days Dedicated to Alternative Approaches to Childbirth at the Department of Studies on Language and Culture 28th and 29th March

Organised by the Laboratory of Ethno-Anthropology (LEA) within Unimores Department of Studies on Language and Culture, and sponsored by ANPIA the Italian National Professional Association of Anthropology, the event "Birth, Anthropology, Society: Reflections on Alternative Approaches to Childbirth" will offer a programme of discussions and activities open to the public on 28th and 29th March. The initiative aims to increase awareness of different childbirth management options by bringing together hospital-based and independent professionals, including midwives associations and doulas.
The event will take place at the Departments premises in Largo S. Eufemia, Modena. On Friday, 28th March, from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, the theatre performance "The Oldest Profession in the World", written by Gabriella Pacini and performed by Laura Nardi, will be staged. On Saturday, 29th March, from 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, an informative day featuring a series of thematic discussions will be held.
The topics covered will draw on the latest research in medical and body anthropology, exploring the cultural dimensions of pain and childbirth, cross-cultural comparisons of different paradigms of the body and health that can be integrated with biomedical approaches, and an analysis of diverse childbirth practices across cultures, commented Professor Stefano Boni of Unimore.
The morning session will be chaired by Annalisa Garzonio, a researcher in medical anthropology at Unimore, and will include talks by Marzia Bisognin, who will discuss stereotypes surrounding motherhood during pregnancy, and Elisabetta Balia, who will explore the role of doulas, their valuable support for women and midwives, and the opportunities they offer.
The afternoon sessions, starting at 2:00 pm, will be chaired by Professor Stefano Boni of Unimore. Psychotherapist Cristina Rigamonti and Annalisa Garzonio will present a theoretical and experiential approach useful for pregnant women and the healthcare professionals who support them. This will be followed by a talk from Niccolò Giovannini, a gynaecologist from the Mangiagalli Clinic in Milan, who will introduce Mynd&Co, an innovative and groundbreaking approach to pregnancy care. Finally, midwife Gabriella Pacini will explore how ancient and modern rituals can influence the body.
