Education for Responsible Digital Use: Agreement Between the Montefiorino Comprehensive School and Unimore’s CRID

In a world where technology now affects nearly every aspect of our lives, especially for younger generations, it’s essential to reflect on the risks this transformation brings and think about new educational strategies to address them.

It is in response to these needs that digital education pacts have been created—tools that can be seen as shared responsibility agreements between young people, schools, and families, involving everyone in the education of minors.

In this context, the memorandum of understanding between the Montefiorino Comprehensive School and the DET – Law, Ethics, and Technology workshop at CRID, Interdepartmental Research Centre on Discrimination and Vulnerability at Unimore has been established.

The aim of this agreement is to promote—through a series of initiatives—responsible digital education among young people, their families, schools, and local associations.

The first event will take place on Saturday, 22 March, starting at 9:30 am, at the "E. Gorrieri" Hall at Rocca di Montefiorino (Via Rocca 1, Montefiorino, MO).

This event will feature the official presentation of the agreement, followed by a roundtable discussion titled "Let’s Make a Pact!" where participants will discuss the opportunities and risks technology presents and explore how Digital Community Pacts can be a tool for educating people on the use of digital devices and social media.

The CRID has long been engaged with the “Digital Pacts” initiative (www.pattidigitali.it), and several schools are now participating in this programme. Within the DET workshop, the working group "Digital Education Pacts and Responsible Internet Use" is particularly active, coordinated by Dr Claudia Severi (PhD candidate in Humanities, Technology, and Society and Scientific Secretary at CRID).

The event will include greetings from the Mayor of Montefiorino, Maurizio Paladini; an introduction and coordination by Lawyer Giuseppe Bove; and contributions from Martina Guiducci, Headteacher of IC Montefiorino, and Chiara Bonvicini, Community Paediatrician from Sassuolo.

The main focus of the discussion will be Dr Claudia Severi’s presentation.

Digital education,” says Dr Severi , “is a crucial challenge today, as it ensures young people use technology responsibly and consciously.”

“Signing this agreement with the Montefiorino Comprehensive School,” she continues, “is a significant step in the right direction. Through collaboration between schools, universities, and the local community, we can promote a digital culture based on awareness, responsibility, and active participation.”

“CRID and the DET workshop, founded by Prof. Thomas Casadei,” concludes Dr Severi , “are proud to contribute to such initiatives, which combine research on the impact of technology with the university’s third mission, creating practical tools to tackle the challenges of the digital age.”

“The digitalisation of schools,” says Prof. Guiducci, “requires us, as educators, to rethink our approach and implement a series of coordinated, structured actions, recognising that digital technology demands a shift from traditional teaching methods. This means preparing teachers for a new, more collaborative way of teaching while also supporting and involving families and the local community in the digital transformation.”

“Initial research has confirmed that early access to smartphones and social media negatively affects learning abilities,” continues Prof. Guiducci “For this reason, it is urgent to adopt school and educational policies that promote responsible and regulated use of technology among minors.”

“Only in this way,” she concludes, “can schools keep up with the rapid technological changes we are witnessing without falling behind.”
