At the Department of Law focus on Marsilius of Padua's Defensor Pacis

The second meeting of the 29th cycle of the Permanent Seminar on Theory of Law and Practical Philosophy will feature Prof. Chiara Magneschi (Univ. of Florence), author of a recent and important study on Marsilius of Padua.
Prof. Magneschi's lecture, entitled A paradigm in another sense? Ius e lex in Marsilius of Padua, will take its cue from the recent publication entitled Law in another sense. Ius e lex in Marsilio da Padova (Pisa University Press, 2024).
Prof. Thomas Casadei, Professor of Philosophy of Law at the Department of Law, will introduce the work.
Within a cycle of Seminars focusing on the genesis and function of paradigms in the philosophy of law, explains Prof. Casadei , we could not miss a reflection on the role that Marsilius of Padua's thought played in the construction of paradigms central to the genesis of modernity, such as the secular foundation of public institutions and the consensus of citizens with respect to the organisation of power and its decisions.
The occasion will also allow - continues Prof. Gianfrancesco Zanetti, founder, with the collaboration of Prof. Casadei, of the Permanent Seminar on Theory of Law and Practical Philosophy - to focus, thanks to an in-depth analysis of Marsilius of Padua's main work, the Defensor Pacis, on key categories for legal doctrine such as, specifically, ius and lex.
The meeting will be held on Thursday 13 March, at 12 noon, in Room B of the Department of Law (Via San Geminiano, 3 - Modena).
The scientific-organisational coordination is by Dr Marco Mondello (research fellow at the Dept. of Law, Univ. of Modena and Reggio Emilia).
