The Liceo Scientifico Tassoni wins the XXI edition of the Coppa Ruffini

In the weekend in Modena, the 21st edition of the Ruffini Cup, a national mathematics team competition aimed at upper secondary school students organised by the Physics, Informatics and Mathematics Department of Unimore, was held, with the Liceo Scientifico Tassoni of Modena excelling.

The top four, who qualified for the national finals in Cesenatico, scheduled for early May, are in order: Liceo Tassoni with 1339 points, Liceo Galileo Galilei of Caravaggio (Bergamo) with 945 points, Istituto tecnico Enrico Fermi of Modena with 846 points and Liceo Formiggini of Sassuolo with 772 points.

26 teams took part in the event, totalling over 180 male and female students from the provinces of Modena, Reggio Emilia, Bologna, Piacenza, Parma, Mantova, Bergamo, Arezzo and Carrara. Each participating school fielded a team of seven students, who competed in solving 21 challenging exercises.

‘The Ruffini Cup represents an important opportunity for students with a passion for mathematics to compete in an exciting problem solving competition. It was a particularly gripping edition, in which all the teams worked with great motivation until the very end despite very difficult problems,’ commented Prof. Giuseppe Mazzuoccolo, Unimore's contact person for the event. ’I would like to thank Councillor Venturelli for her participation, the manager of the facility, Franco Culcasi, for his availability and valuable collaboration in organising the event, and all the students from the degree programme and PhD Programme in Mathematics who gave us great help in running the competition.

At the same time as the Ruffini Cup, 36 other similar competitions were held throughout Italy, all coordinated at national level by the UMI (Italian Mathematical Union) and the University of Genoa, in which the teams that will compete in the national final in Cesenatico were selected.
