Law Students at the University of Coimbra for an Erasmus BIP Project on Artificial Intelligence and Law

This week marked the beginning of the Erasmus Blended Intensive Programme (BIP) Artificial Intelligence and Law , an intensive study programme that combines a short physical mobility (field visit) with a mandatory online component (online session). Five students from Unimore are also taking part.
Following the success of the first Erasmus BIP experience last year, which took place at the Universidad de Jaén, this year the Department of Law, in collaboration with CRID the Interdepartmental Research Centre on Discrimination and Vulnerabilities at Unimore, has once again aimed to create and offer new international mobility opportunities. The goal is to develop innovative learning methods and implement the creation of transnational, multidisciplinary courses.
The first part of the programme involves five days of lectures (from 3 to 7 March) at the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra. For Unimore, there will be a lecture by Dr Claudia Severi, Scientific-Organisational Coordinator of CRID and a researcher in the field of technology and environmental sustainability. The distance learning activities will take place on 24 March, 31 March, and 7 April.
The core of this innovative training programme focuses on artificial intelligence, its implications, and the challenges it brings. Through an interdisciplinary approach, the lectures aim to provide students with critical tools to understand the role of artificial intelligence in shaping both contemporary and future realities..
The lectures will be held in English, and the main topics covered will include digital transformation, participation in democratic life through the use of technology, and the ethics of artificial intelligence.
The Programme Coordinator for the leading university is Professor André Gonçalo Dias Pereira (University of Coimbra; President of the Board of the Centre for Biolaw; Vice-President of the National Ethics Council for the Life Sciences), while the Scientific Project Leader for the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia is Professor Thomas Casadei, Director of CRID-Unimore.
"Artificial intelligence is redefining the boundaries of law and democratic participation, and for this reason, it is essential to offer students opportunities for study and deepening, even in an international context," says Professor Casadei, announcing the launch of the Erasmus BIP Artificial Intelligence and Law.
"This programme, supported by the European Union, allows students from the Master's Degree in Law and the Bachelor's Degree in Business and Public Administration Law to experience a short but equally stimulating and important educational experience abroad, compared to the traditional Erasmus programme."
"Emerging technologies raise urgent questions about the protection of fundamental rights and the delicate balance between innovation and regulation. Addressing these topics in an international context," concludes Professor Casadei , "enables the development of a critical and interdisciplinary perspective, which is essential for the lawyers of tomorrow."
The Erasmus Blended Intensive Programme Artificial Intelligence and Law is realised thanks to the cooperation of several universities: in addition to the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, the University of Coimbra (the coordinating institution), the University of Seville, the University of Alicante, EPS Escuela Politécnica Superior, and KUL John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin.
The programme is part of a recently signed collaboration agreement between CRID the Interdepartmental Research Centre on Discrimination and Vulnerabilities at Unimore, the Centre for Biolaw at the Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Coimbra, and the Facultad de Derecho de la Universidad de Sevilla. The agreement provides for exchanges of faculty, researchers, and students, as well as the development of annual research programmes, courses, seminars, workshops, and joint publications involving the parties.
