A Unimore research awarded at the international conference on medical cannabis in Switzerland

Renowned scientists from all over the world gathered at the International Medical Cannabis Conference (IMCCB-25) to present the latest findings from research and clinical practice related to cannabis for medical use and its active ingredients. The aim of the meeting was to foster an interdisciplinary exchange to deepen the scientific basis for the correct therapeutic use of cannabis.
The Department of Life Sciences from Unimore also participated in the conference, thanks to the study conducted by Professor Federica Pellati, a lecturer in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, who presented the role of non-psychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol (CBD), in hyperproliferative diseases, with a particular focus on chronic myeloid leukaemia.
The study was recognised as the best oral presentation in the field of basic research and lays the foundations for the potential use of CBD in therapeutic settings, even in combination with anticancer drugs already used in clinical practice.
"Having observed a significant action of the molecule as an inhibitor of tumour cell proliferation," comments Professor Federica Pellati from Unimore, "we focused on elucidating the mechanism of action by applying omics techniques, such as proteomics and lipidomics, to define potential molecular targets and cellular effects related to lipid modulation."
"I am particularly grateful to all my colleagues," concludes Professor Pellati , "who contributed to the research: Professor Lorenzo Corsi from Unimore, Professor Maria Chiara Monti from Federico II University of Naples, and Professor Antonia Garcia from Universidad CEU San Pablo in Madrid."
