Unimore's sixth TACC project kicks off

The sixth edition of the TACC project - Training for Automotive Companies Creation by Unimore, an interdisciplinary initiative that trains students in entrepreneurship, particularly in the field of sustainable mobility, will kick off on Friday, 21st February 2025, at the Tecnopolo in Modena, at the "Enzo Ferrari" Department of Engineering.

The multidisciplinary approach of TACC, a unique training programme in the Italian academic landscape, spans across various fields, including engineering, communication, economics, social sciences, design, business organisation, chemistry, computer science, life sciences, psychology, and marketing. This approach is crucial for equipping future companies with the necessary skills to tackle the complex challenges of the sector.

The project, led by Professor Luigi Rovati (Department of Engineering "Enzo Ferrari") and Professor Bernardo Balboni (Department of Economics "Marco Biagi"), involves teams of students working on the development of their own business ideas. They are supported by lecturers, experts, and professionals to address market needs with their own start-up projects..

The project is divided into two phases: in the first phase (February – June), students will acquire cross-disciplinary skills, focusing on developing entrepreneurial attitudes and the soft skills essential for starting a business. At the same time, students are required to identify current or emerging issues in the field of sustainable mobility and related services, from which they will generate entrepreneurial ideas aimed at solving these problems.

The proposed ideas are evaluated by the students themselves, with the help of a team of mentors, and the 8-10 most promising ideas are selected. Workgroups are then formed around these ideas to further develop them.

At the end of the first phase, the student teams will present their business ideas to the Commission – composed of professors, managers, representatives from companies, partners, entrepreneurs, and sector experts – in a pitch session. The best entrepreneurial ideas, according to the Commission's judgment, will progress to the second phase..

The second phase (September – December) focuses on the development, prototyping, and validation of the entrepreneurial ideas, in a hands-on, practical application-oriented process. At the end of the second phase, participants will discuss their Project Work and Business Case with the Commission, presenting their business project in a final ceremony marking the conclusion of the programme.

Each phase of the project lasts 120 hours. In addition to the classroom activities and entrepreneurial idea development, optional activities are included, both nationally and internationally, such as workshops, company visits, and group work, to enhance the students’ skills and support their preparation.

At the end of the project, the partners and promoters of the initiative may decide whether to invest in the business creation projects developed by the students. In previous editions, the project has contributed to the launch of several successful entrepreneurial ventures and supported students and young professionals in their journey towards creating their own companies, such as Novac, Galvani Power, Refuel Solutions, WeCare, and WheelHub Connect.

TACC is part of the International Academy for Advanced Technologies in High-Performance Vehicles and Engines at Unimore and is an integral component of the Automotive Innovation Hub, a centre established in 2017 in Modena to explore the trends driving the transformation of the automotive world: electric vehicles, connectivity, autonomous driving, and new forms of mobility. Additionally, TACC is part of the incubation programmes for Technology Transfer and Innovation of EcosistER, funded by the PNRR.

The main partners of the project include: AVL, the world's largest private company for research and development of propulsion systems, the Modena Foundation, the Young Entrepreneurs Group of Confindustria Emilia Centro, the Modena Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Craftsmanship, and Agriculture, and the Open Lab of Modena..
