MOLECOLES: a day dedicated to Prof. Ulderico Segre

A day in memory of a professor who made history at Unimore and left his mark on Italian chemistry and beyond with his research work. We are talking about Prof. Ulderico Segre, full professor of Physical Chemistry who died prematurely in 2008. To the scientific, academic and human figure of the professor, the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences is dedicating a day of remembrance of his research studies and more, which has enabled the creation of the documentary film MOLECOLE, made by his son Andrea Segre, an internationally renowned director.
The event, part of Unimore's 850th anniversary celebrations, will be held on Tuesday 11 February 2025 at 2.30 p.m. in Aula U1.3 of the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences (via Campi 103). The meeting will be opened by Prof. Segre's colleagues, Gianantonio Battistuzzi, Ledi Menabue, Alfonso Pedone, Donatella Carbonera and Ugo Cosentino, who will trace the academic career of the professor who was and is a reference figure in the University's chemical community.
Prof. Segre, in addition to holding numerous programmes on the subject of chemistry and physics, played important institutional roles in Unimore; he was President of the Degree Programmes in Chemistry and Chemical Sciences, contributing to the definition of their current organisation and teaching structure; he was one of the promoters of the Scientific Degrees Project, promoted by MIUR and Confindustria, to encourage the academic study of basic scientific subjects (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Materials Science); and he was the first national coordinator of the Scientific Degrees Project - Chemistry, until his death.
The importance of his work was such that the National School of Chemical Educational Research and Didactics, organised annually by the Italian Chemical Society, is named after him.
At 3.30 p.m. will be the screening of MOLECOLE, presented on the pre-opening night of the 77th Venice International Film Festival in 2020, which describes how the lockdown, caused by the pandemic, returned Venice to its nature and history, but the real protagonist of the film is Prof. Ulderico Segre, thanks to the archive of Super8 films he shot, which form the thread of the narrative. The event and the screening, which will be preceded by a presentation by the director Andrea Segre himself, are open to the entire academic community and citizens.
