International Day of Women and Girls in Science

On the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, Unimore is organising a number of events to promote gender equality in university studies and research and to stimulate a critical view on gender prejudices and stereotypes in the scientific world.
Globally, a significant gender gap persists at all levels of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. Although women have made enormous progress towards greater participation in higher education, they are still underrepresented in these fields, often facing implicit or explicit cultural stereotypes that effectively limit their access to scientific careers. Furthermore, they may be exposed to discrimination or prejudice that limits their opportunities for learning and skills development. Concrete actions and mentoring programmes are needed that can inspire girls to embark on this path and counter the idea that female and able in science are incompatible characteristics.
The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, says Unimore's Delegate for Equal Opportunities Prof. Tindara Addabbo, wants to play an active role in the territories so that the barriers that prevent girls from embarking on training pathways aimed at entering STEM areas, where they are currently still strongly under-represented, can be broken down.
The initiatives, supported by the Department of Life Sciences and the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences, will be held in Modena.
The first event, which will be held on Tuesday 11 February 2025 at 09.00 a.m. at the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences (via Campi, 103), will deal with the theme Accelerating Equity in Science and is intended to be not only a time for reflection, but also an opportunity to establish an active network of women and men aimed at overcoming the barriers to equality in science. The event will be opened by the Director of the Department, Prof. Mauro Soldati, and will continue with short speeches on the topic of Accelerating Equity in Science by Prof. Erika Ferrari and Prof. Francesca Parenti and by Dr. Monica Vaccari, Equal Opportunities Representative of the Department of Chemical and Geological Sciences.
The second appointment will be the screening of the film Margherita's Theorem, due to take place on Thursday 13 February at 3.30 p.m. in the Cinema Hall Aula B0.4 of the Department of Linguistic and Cultural Studies (largo Sant'Eufemia, 19), and will feature an introduction by prof. Giovanni Zini, Director of the Department of Physics, Informatics and Mathematics, and Prof. Chiara De Fabritiis, Coordinator of the Diversity, Equity, Inclusion Committee of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Mathematics of the Università Politecnica delle Marche. Admission is free and open to Unimore students and staff.
The third event will be a special morning entitled Let's build an inclusive future in research, which will be held on Friday 14 February 2025 at 9.00 a.m. in Aula 1.3 (via Campi, 103), and will see female researchers and recent graduates, engaged in Agrifood, Biological, Biotechnological and Pharmaceutical research, meet students from Modena High Schools to whom they will illustrate the study and research activities that are conducted in the laboratories. The appointment will be opened by the greetings of Prof. Lorena Rebecchi, Director of the Department of Life Sciences.
All the appointments are an opportunity in particular for girls who have not yet chosen their university and professional future.
