Third appointment of the cycle "Cultural heritage: yesterday, today, tomorrow" dedicated to the scale model collection of the Gemma University Museum of Unimore

The lecture series Cultural Heritage: yesterday, today, tomorrow” of the University Museum Gemma which is part of the initiatives for the 850th anniversary of Unimore, continues with the third appointment with free admission, on Wednesday 5 February at 5.30 p.m. at the Complesso Sant'Eufemia (Largo Sant'Eufemia 19, Modena), dedicated to curiosities and discoveries during the restoration of the Gemma University Museum's scale model collection.

The collection of geological relief plans (also known as scale models or “geologically painted relief plans”) kept at the Gemma Estense Mineralogical and Geological Museum, as part of the heritage of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, is one of the most important collections of relief plans still available in Italy. The collection consists of 12 painted plaster and paper works of various sizes relating to areas mainly within the borders of the Italian state, created between the late 19th and early 20th century.

These three-dimensional reliefs constituted an exceptional instrument of scientific communication of the national territory, with which to represent the specificities of the areas reproduced and the presence of natural resources.

The Modenese scale model collection consists of 11 painted plaster and paper geological reliefs, ten of which represent volcanic areas in the Mediterranean area made by the plastic artist Amedeo Aureli, while a single plane-relief, reconstructing the morainic amphitheatre of Ivrea, is the work of Domenico Locchi. A twelfth model reproducing Amedeo Aureli's Geographical Relief of Mont Blanc was recently added to this historic collection, although it was found in very poor condition.

Restoration work, carried out by Chiara Bazolli on both the survey of Mont Blanc and that of the islands of Alicudi and Filicudi, brought back the original beauty of these cartographic works of art.

The conference cycle "Cultural Heritage: yesterday, today, tomorrow" is curated by Milena Bertacchini, head of the Estense Gemma Geological and Mineralogical Museum, which from 2022 will be part of the Unimore Museum and Botanical Garden System.
