Prof. Federica Ferraguti won the Italian Science Fund 2023 call for proposals

Prof. Federica Ferraguti of Unimore's Department of Science and Methods for Engineering recently won the FIS2 - Fondo Italiano per la Scienza 2023 (Italian Science Fund 2023) call for proposals, thanks to the TRAMIS - Trustworthy Robotic Assistant for Improved Minimally Invasive Surgery project, obtaining a 1.3 million euro grant that will enable the recruitment of 6 two-year researchers and 4 PhD students.

The TRAMIS project aims to develop an autonomous robotic system that can provide support to the surgeon during minimally invasive surgeries performed manually or robot-assisted. The robotic system will benefit from an advanced perception of the environment and understanding of the surgical scene thanks to the design of artificial intelligence algorithms for analysing intraoperative images.

An advanced augmented reality module will allow the intraoperative images to be overlaid with relevant information for the surgeon, both diagnostic and procedural.

The project will reduce the cost of surgical interventions and optimise resources for each procedure, offering multiple benefits for both patients and the healthcare system. A reduction in waiting lists for minimally invasive surgeries will be achieved, allowing patients faster access to procedures. The affordability of the system compared to currently available robotic solutions will make its adoption possible even in smaller healthcare facilities, ensuring that advanced technologies are spread throughout the territory.

‘Surgical robotics is transforming surgery, offering patients significant benefits in terms of less invasiveness, greater precision and faster recovery times. The TRAMIS project aims to take this technology to a new level, integrating robotics, artificial intelligence and augmented reality to create increasingly sophisticated surgical tools to support the surgeon. TRAMIS is certainly a major challenge and contributes to technological development in the extremely complex field of minimally invasive surgery. Thanks to the project's ministerial funds and the constant support of the Department of Science and Methods for Engineering and Unimore, a large group of young researchers with multidisciplinary and complementary skills will work together to bring innovation to the surgical robotics sector, and I hope that in the future it will become a reference for the development of further new projects’ – commented Prof. Ferraguti.

The FIS2 call for proposals, funded by the Ministry of Universities and Research, represents a unique opportunity for Italian researchers to obtain significant funding for outstanding research projects. This instrument, inspired by the ERC model, aims to promote fundamental frontier research, thus supporting innovation and scientific development in our country. The funds allocated enable researchers to pursue innovative ideas, train new generations of scientists and consolidate Italy's position on the international research scene.
