Unimore organises the event ‘Micro- and Milli-biodiversity in the terrestrial environment’, from 21 to 24 January

From 21 to 24 January, the University Campus in Via Campi, Modena, will host the initiative ‘Micro and Milli-biodiversity in the terrestrial environment’, a journey to discover the microscopic and millimetric life that lives on our planet. The event is organised as part of the outreach and research activities of Spoke 3 of the National Biodiversity Centre (NBFC-NRRP), which includes a nucleus of researchers from the Department of Life Sciences of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, and under the patronage of the Italian Botanical Society (SBI) and the Italian Zoological Union (UZI).

The event will open with a free-entry Workshop titled ‘A World of Microscopic Living Forms: Problems and Modern Techniques in Taxonomy’ on Tuesday 21 January (via G. Campi 103, Aula U0.3). This workshop is organised by Prof. Lorena Rebecchi, co-coordinator of Spoke 3 NBFC, and Prof. Anna Maria Mercuri. It is dedicated to the discovery of microscopic and millimetric biodiversity in terrestrial and freshwater environments.  The workshop will feature speakers from various Italian universities involved in the National Centre for Biodiversity who will discuss the challenges and modern techniques for studying the biological diversity of microscopic living forms. Topics will include microbial collections, filamentous microfungi, green algae and cyanobacteria, pollen, ciliates, gastrotrichs, dipterans, syrphids, mites, and tardigrades. Registration is mandatory: https://shorturl.at/AvNnV.

‘In the current context of climate change, habitat loss, local and global extinction of species, it is crucial to recognise the crucial role that biodiversity plays in maintaining the functioning of the Planet as an essential resource for humanity and for the health of ecosystems that underpin the regeneration of environmental resources,’ says Prof. Rebecchi.

From 22 to 24 January, the Winter School of Palynology 2025 will continue with the closed-door ‘Pollen Morphology: Parameters, Taxonomy and Evolution’, at the Laboratory of Palynology and Palaeobotany, (LaBS classrooms - via G. Campi 287), organised by Prof. Anna Maria Mercuri and Assunta Florenzano.  During the three days, participants will explore the parameters used to identify and classify pollen, based on applications in ecology and palaeopalinology and the latest discoveries in the field of evolution. The Winter School includes theoretical and practical lectures under an optical microscope, where each participant will have a box of reference slides to observe together with cards to guide morphological descriptions

The initiative continues the tradition of the palynology schools that already in the 1980s attracted scholars and enthusiasts from all over Italy to Modena on the themes of interdisciplinarity and applications of Palynology. Today, the experience starts again from the pillar of morphopalinology and the response of registrations has far exceeded the 20 places available,' comment organisers Anna Maria Mercuri and Assunta Florenzano.
