A special event for the 50th anniversary of the School of Specialization in Oncology in Modena

Unimore is organising a special event to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the School of Specialisation in Oncology of Modena, established back in 1974. The event will be held on Friday 13 December, from 1.30 p.m., in the Aula Magna of the Service Centre of the Faculty of Medicine of Unimore (via del Pozzo 71, c/o Policlinico di Modena).

The Unimore School of Specialisation in Oncology is one of Italy's institutions dedicated to the advanced training of medical specialists in Oncology, whose history dates back to the 1970s, and is part of the broader context of the development of oncology as a medical discipline to guarantee specialist training after graduating in Medicine and Surgery.

The School of Specialisation in Oncology at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, which witnessed the first trainee graduate on 22 November 1974, initially developed under the aegis of Pathological Anatomy, in particular thanks to the support of Prof. Livio Trentini. The aim was to respond to the nascent field of chemotherapy treatments, which required specific skills that were then rooted in internal medicine and even more so in haematology in Modena, which, like oncology, has now turned 50.

The School of Specialisation in Oncology in Modena, managed until last 30 November by Prof. Massimo Dominici, Professor at Unimore and Director of the Complex Structure of Oncology, is now directed by Prof. Federico Piacentini, Associate Professor of Oncology and Head of the PDTA Breast Neoplasia at the AOU of Modena.

‘Since its foundation, the School of Modena, with its university polyclinic, has played an important role in the development of oncology in Emilia-Romagna and in Italy,’ comments Prof. Dominici. - About 500 doctors have specialised in this half-century. The School has historically focused on a close collaboration between research, teaching, and clinical practice, contributing to a solid training that has generated medical oncologists and solid foundations for an efficient, up-to-date, and patient-oriented medical practice'.

‘Today, the school has 48 enrolled students and during the five years of training provides for rotations in the various clinical facilities of the Modenese Oncology Centre, at the Oncology DHs of Sassuolo and Mirandola, the Oncology of the S.M. Nuova Hospital in Reggio Emilia, as well as collaboration with the Republic of San Marino’ - continues Prof. Piacentini . - I am honoured to inherit the direction of the School of Specialisation in Oncology in Modena, in which I myself specialised. Over time, our School has become a reference point for cancer treatment and research at regional and national level thanks to an advanced training programme rich in theory, clinical practice, participation in conference activities, and research'.

‘This School is characterised by a multidisciplinary approach that touches on various areas of training, thanks also to collaboration with centres of excellence and close synergy with local and international institutions specialising in cancer treatment. The School's 50 years bear witness to the continuity of one of our University's great medical schools,’ concludes Prof. Michele Zoli, President of the Faculty of Medicine.
