At the Law Department for the series "Methodologies, Social Changes, and Legal Professions" - A discussion on Argumentation and the Cognitive Turn

The seminar series "Methodologies, Social Changes, and Legal Professions: New Challenges for Argumentation" reaches its sixth and final session: on Friday 29th November, Professor Giovanni Bombelli from the Cattolica University of Milan will deliver a lecture on the complex relationship between normative argumentation and the so-called "cognitive turn," between legal positivism and legal cognitivism.

The event, which will begin at 12.00, is organised as part of the course Foundations of Normative Argumentation (Prof. Gianfrancesco Zanetti), in collaboration with the Interdepartmental Centre for Discrimination and Vulnerability – CRID Unimore.

“With this final session,” says Prof. Gianfrancesco Zanetti, “we will conclude a series that has been rich in insights and interpretative approaches, enabling students, scholars, and all those interested to engage with key aspects of the new frontiers of normative discourse. Specifically, in this sixth session, we will be joined by a scholar who has been investigating contemporary social phenomena from a legal-philosophical perspective for many years.”

“Professor Bombelli’s lecture,” continues Prof. Zanetti , “represents a valuable opportunity to shed new light on central issues in the contemporary debate, which we have explored throughout the course, such as the role of shared values in shaping institutional and normative horizons. Methodologically, a cognitive approach will be presented, aiming to identify new conceptual tools useful for addressing the increasing complexity of certain social pathologies.”

The session will draw from Professor Bombelli’s book Law, Behaviours, and Forms of "Belief" (Giappichelli, 2017) and his contribution “Cognitive Turn”? Between Legal Positivism and Legal Cognitivism. Some Socio-Legal Reflections (in Sociologia del diritto, 1, 2022, pp. 71-97).

The scientific coordination is managed by Prof. Gianfrancesco Zanetti, Prof. Thomas Casadei, Prof. Gianluigi Fioriglio, and Prof. Rosaria PirosaFor further information, please contact the scientific-organisational secretariat: Dr Gianluca Gasparini, Dr Claudia Severi, Dr Marco Mondello, Dr Casimiro Coniglione (segreteria.crid@unimore.it).
