‘Metaphor, emotion, vision": two-day conference on metaphor and aesthetic experience in Reggio Emilia
The conference ‘Metaphor, Emotion, Vision’, organised by Unimore and the University of Milan, will be held on 27 November at Città Studi Milan (2.30-6 p.m.) and on the days of 28 and 29 November in Reggio Emilia (Palazzo Baroni). The conference will focus on metaphor as a device of mediation and interaction between language, visual experience and emotional experience.
In contemporary Studies, the aesthetic aspect of metaphor has found ample space in reflections on the embodied character of conceptual metaphors. From this research, the hypothesis, shared in various fields of study (philosophical, linguistic, psychological), that metaphor is an interface capable of connecting the aesthetic plane of experience with linguistic expression and abstract thought, has been reinforced. In the investigation of visual metaphors, the marked interpretive character, creativity and emotional power of metaphorical images also emerged.
At this conference, hosting speakers from the fields of aesthetics, philosophy of language, theoretical philosophy and linguistics, an attempt will be made to draw further possible interpretations of the relationship between metaphor and aesthetic experience, while maintaining the focus on linguistic metaphor. The conference, also through the workshop mode, also aims to suggest ways and means for educational planning: in particular, ways will be suggested to enhance metaphors and metaphorical processes to develop cognitive, argumentative and expressive skills.
The section of the conference taking place at Unimore is part of the research activities of the Project of Excellence Illiteracy at high social cost: research tools for its reduction. The project aims to identify ways of educational-didactic intervention to combat illiteracy by promoting the development of key competences. The workshop ‘Metaphors, Reasoning and Change of Perspective’ is also part of the activities of the ‘Laboratory on Critical Thinking’ of the Department of Education and Human Sciences.
The organisation of the conference was supported by the FAR 2023 Departmental Language and Philosophy of Emotions. Theoretical, historical-literary issues and educational declinations, coordinated by Prof. Annamaria Contini.
For students of degree programmes and Master's degree programmes of the Department of Education and Human Sciences of Reggio Emilia, 1 CFU is recognised among the free-choice activities upon participation in at least half a day on 28 November and in the workshop on 29 November. The participation of school teachers in the day on 28 November is recognised as a refresher course (8 hours).
