Unimore's 850th anniversary celebrations kick off

Inaugurating the programme of events celebrating the 850th anniversary of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia will be, on Wednesday 23 October, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., in the Church of San Carlo in Modena, the public meeting with free participationFrom Bernardino Ramazzini to the present and the future - a current message on Health, Safety at Work and the Environment’. The event aims to raise awareness of the legacy left behind by this great master of medicine, today recognised as the founder and father of occupational medicine, and to stimulate public discussion on the present and future of the relationship between work and health.

The meeting, moderated by Prof. Roberto Lucchini (Occupational Medicine Unimore and Florida International University) and Prof. Alberto Modenese (Occupational Medicine Unimore), will be introduced by a musical performance by the vocal and instrumental ensemble of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia directed by Maestra Antonella Coppi, with music from the Ramazzini period.

It is an exceptional event celebrating an absolute forerunner of today's and tomorrow's issues, a world-renowned lecturer from the University of Modena and the Collegio San Carlo, which should be known and appreciated especially by the younger generation” commented Prof. Roberto Lucchini.

In 1700, Bernardino Ramazzini published the De Morbis Artificum Diatriba, the world's first treatise on occupational medicine. The master's teachings are a valuable starting point to address the current situation of work-related illnesses and accidents and the future challenges of the general environment. The Carpi Hospital and the Ramazzini Onlus Institute in Bologna are dedicated to Ramazzini, which deals with research into tumours and carcinogenic risks of environmental and occupational origin.

The event will open with speeches by Unimore Rector Carlo Adolfo Porro, Modena's deputy mayor Francesca Maletti, and the Director of the Modena Public Health Department Davide Ferrari.

The programme will be followed by a series of historical speeches, with Prof. Berenice Cavarra (History of Medicine Unimore) who will speak on ‘Science and society at the time of Ramazzini’, Prof. Michele Riva (History of Medicine UniMilano) who will present an in-depth discussion on ‘Ramazzini the reformer of medicine and guardian of tradition’ and Dr. Giuliano Franco (formerly of Occupational Medicine Unimore) who will close by explaining ‘How the cleaning of a malodorous cloaca stimulated Ramazzini to take care of the health of those who work’.

This will be followed by a round table involving Lorenzo Alessio (former UniBrescia Occupational Medicine) who will explain ‘Why Milan developed the Ramazzini vision’, Fabriziomaria Gobba (Unimore Occupational Medicine) who will illustrate ‘How the Ramazzini method has influenced modern risk assessment’, Giovanna Tranfo (INAIL) who will highlight ‘INAIL's mission from compensation to the promotion of wellbeing through scientific research’, and Sergio Pecorelli (former UniBS Rector, Lorenzini Foundation) who will address the highly topical theme ‘Not only prevention of occupational risks but also health promotion’.

The event will close with a public debate that will provide space for reflections on safety and health in the workplace and the environment by civil society, based on questions from students, students, citizens and workers, with speeches by Melissa McDiarmid (Collegium Ramazzini), Daniele Mandrioli (Ramazzini Institute), Roberto Moccaldi (AIRM - Italian Medical Radiation Protection Association), Maurilio Missere (Poliambulatorio Giardini Margherita), Donatella Placidi (UniBrescia), Pietro Forghieri (ISDE - Association of Physicians for the Environment), Matteo Fadenti (AIFOS - Italian Association of Trainers and Operators for Safety at Work).
