Unimore launches new master's degree program in nursing and midwifery together with Ausl of Modena

A press conference was held to present the new Master's Degree Programme in Nursing and Midwifery Sciences with a focus on community and community care. The two-year course, which is open to a maximum of 40 students, will be based in Modena and represents a concrete response to the territory's requests in terms of the development of territorial assistance and the reorganisation of the healthcare system. Last Friday, the entrance examination was held, which saw 277 applications, despite the programme being newly established. For 156 students this was their first choice, a sign of the interest in the training proposal.

The course presentation was attended by the Rector of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Carlo Adolfo PorroAnna Maria Petrini, Director General of the Modena AUSL, the President of the ProvinceFabio Braglia and Prof. Annalisa Bargellini, President of the Degree Programme.

The establishment of this new programme was born as a pilot experience at a national level, also in response to the requests of the Health Authorities of the territory and of the Professional Associations of reference, in line with the need of the Regione Emilia-Romagna to initiate a process of development of territorial care consistently with the objectives of the NRRP, and aims at training highly qualified and versatile professional figures, capable of responding to the increasingly complex challenges of the territorial healthcare system.

The programme will pay particular attention to the development of skills to support projects for reorganisation and innovation, both technological and IT, of health systems. Particular attention will also be devoted to the training of professionals capable of managing complex care pathways and of assuming the functions of case manager: professional profiles capable of guaranteeing continuity of care between hospital and territory and taking charge of the person, the family and the community.

Graduates, boasting not only advanced technical skills but also a deep understanding of the organisational and management dynamics of the health care system and the needs of patients, will be well positioned to become part of the new set-up in the health care sector. Therefore, they will be included in apprenticeships at the Health Authorities and will then be able to find job opportunities in various settings, starting with the territorial health authorities, starting with the public ones: in hospitals and in the various territorial facilities - from Community Homes to Community Hospitals and Hospices - and in all those contexts where the Community Nurse becomes an increasingly central figure for the patient and his/her family. Other job opportunities could be clinics, health care and rehabilitation facilities and private and associated studies.

The training programme was developed in close cooperation with the Modena Local Health Unit and the Order of Professional Nurses, under the coordination during the entire design phase of Prof. Annalisa Bargellini, Associate of General and Applied Hygiene at the Department of Biomedical, Metabolic and Neural Science.

The activation of the new Master's Degree Programme in Nursing and Midwifery Sciences - comments the Rector of Unimore, Professor Carlo Adolfo Porro - marks a significant step for our University and for the territory. This programme stems from the desire to train professionals with advanced skills, capable of tackling the increasingly complex needs of the health system and guaranteeing comprehensive care for the individual, the family and the community. Collaboration between universities, health authorities and professional associations has been crucial in outlining a programme that enhances both clinical and organisational training. With this programme, we are committed to providing highly qualified figures, capable of managing continuity of care and responding effectively to the challenges of the sector. It is an ambitious project, which looks to the future of our healthcare system and which we are confident will bring tangible benefits to both future master graduates and the community.”

I am very happy to see that the participation in the admission tests - states the Director General of the Local Health Unit,  Anna Maria Petrini - is well beyond expectations, a sign that in our nurses and midwives there is a willingness to direct their training to the needs that our territory expresses and will express in the near future. Our municipalities and proximity health facilities, spread throughout the province, are in great need of professionals who have a competent view of the territory, the communities and the health needs expressed by our citizens. For this reason, there will be a great involvement of the company throughout the course of study, through teaching hours but also with the proposal of internships and in-depth studies. Best of luck to all the students who will start the course, and thank you to Unimore for your constant availability on this path”.

"The course was created in close synergy with local and regional companies, which have explicitly requested it, further strengthening the collaboration between the University and the territorial health service - adds Prof. Bargellini -. The rapid activation of the programme, which is the result of a careful and rigorous accreditation process conducted by ANVUR, underlines Unimore's commitment to responding promptly to the growing needs of the area. With this new training programme, the University doubles its capacity to meet the strong demand for enrolment in this area, meeting the strong demand for access recorded in recent years. In fact, applications to the traditional Masster’s Degree Programme in Nursing and Midwifery Sciences, which has been active for years at the Reggio Emilia campus, greatly exceeded the available seats. Thanks to the new training programme, Unimore is making a significant contribution to the training of qualified professionals, capable of responding to the increasingly complex challenges of territorial health care”.
