Specific Learning Disorders and Developmental Disorders: the XXXII AIRIPA Congress concluded in Reggio Emilia

The 32nd AIRIPA (Italian Association for Research and Intervention in the Psychopathology of Learning) National Congress on the new frontiers of research and clinical implications related to Specific Learning Disorders and Developmental Disorders concluded successfully in Reggio Emilia. The event was held in dual mode, face-to-face and online, on 20 and 21 September at Palazzo Dossetti.

The congress, which brought together over a thousand participants from all over the world, more than 600 in attendance and over 400 online, including psychologists, researchers, university lecturers, teachers and students, together with professionals from the field, provided a valuable opportunity for discussion and updating on the latest innovations in the field of Specific Learning Disorders (SLD) and developmental psychopathology.

Inaugurating the proceedings, emphasising the importance of integrating research and clinical practice, and of continuous international updating, were Professor Cesare Cornoldi, President of AIRIPA, Professor Elisabetta Genovese, Unimore Rector's delegate for Disability and SLD, Professor Santo Di Nuovo, President of the AIP (Italian Psychology Association), Silvia Lanzafame, President of the AID (Italian Dyslexia Association), and Tiziana Rossetto, President of the FLI

The opening day featured a lectio magistralis by Mario A. Svirsky, professor in the Department of Otolaryngology at the New York University School of Medicine, entitled “Perceptual learning and neuromodulation”, in which new perspectives of auditory rehabilitation in cochlear implant patients through state-of-the-art technology and neuromodulation were explored. The afternoon concluded with the talk “The Future of Cognitive Neuroscience” by Professor Carlo Arrigo Umiltà from the Department of Psychology at the University of Padua, who outlined the future paths of cognitive neuroscience, offering innovative ideas for the development of research in this field.

The second day, dedicated to a specific focus on Specific Learning Disorders, was opened by Duncan Asle, a researcher at the University of Cambridge, with the talk “Beyond the label? A transdiagnostic approach to neurodevelopment", which presented current models of neurodevelopmental disorders, showing a transdiagnostic approach to neurodevelopmental disorders.

Many presentations explored topics related to learning disorders such as autism, the assessment of cognitive processes, hearing loss and cochlear implants, ADHD and the use of psychological tests. Particular emphasis was also placed on specific sensory disabilities and associated problems with hearing, vision, balance and learning, highlighting the challenges of integrating different sensory systems in the context of developmental disorders. The importance of music as a therapeutic and rehabilitative tool, capable of stimulating cognitive and perceptual processes in individuals with sensory deficits, was also explored.

Monday, 23 September will continue in Modena, in the “Sala Eventi Tecnopolo”, with the post-congress entitled “Hearing, Listening & Learning”, with Professor Barbara Arfé and Professor Elisabetta Genovese as scientific heads. This latest event will delve into the topics of language and learning disorders related to perceptual-verbal difficulties, with talks by international guests and leading Italian research groups.
