Recent Unimore graduate honored by the Italian Association for Information Security

Gianmarco Lusvardi, a recent Unimore graduate from the “Enzo Ferrari” Department of Engineering, was awarded the “Innovare la sicurezza delle informazioni" thesis prize, now in its 19th edition, by CLUSIT, the Italian Association for Information Security.

Lusvardi, a student in the master's degree programme in Computer Engineering, was awarded fifth place (ex-equo) for his thesis “Timing side-channel attacks against USB smartcards using eBPF”, in which he studies and identifies innovative methodologies to verify the possible presence of computer vulnerabilities within cryptographic schemes implemented in dedicated authentication devices. The supervisors of the thesis are Professor Luca Ferretti from the Department of Physical, Computer and Mathematical Sciences and Professor Mirco Marchetti from the “Enzo Ferrari” Department of Engineering.

The prize, reserved for the most innovative university theses in the field of computer security, aims to promote collaboration between those involved in computer security in Italy: companies, universities and students. A meeting point between the world of production and the world of science, between students and the world of work, fed directly by the individual participants bringing their own needs and experiences.

"We congratulate Gianmarco on the recognition he has received at national level,” commented Professors Ferretti and Marchetti. “We were already aware of his ability and the quality of his work, and we hope that the recognition at national level will encourage him to continue contributing to scientific research in this field".

Gianmarco Lusvardi graduated with a Master's degree in Computer Engineering (Artificial Intelligence Engineering curriculum) with a grade of 110 cum laude. He is currently a research fellow at Unimore's Interdepartmental Research Centre for Security and Risk Prevention (CRIS), continuing the theme he began in his master's thesis.

All winners received a cash prize and free membership of CLUSIT, with the opportunity to participate in training initiatives for the next 18 months.

A recording of the event, with the presentation of the theses by the winning students, is available at the link: https://clusit.it/blog/premiazione-dei-vincitori-della-19a-edizione-del-premio-tesi/
