Unimore's Prof. Paolo Pavan is the new president of the Italian Society of Electronics

Paolo Pavan, Professor of the “Enzo Ferrari” Department of Engineering of Unimore, is the new President of the Associazione Società Italiana di Elettronica (SIE). His term of office kicked off at the SIE Members' Assembly, during the annual meeting held in Genoa.

“I am proud, happy and honoured to preside over such a prestigious association as the Italian Electronics Society, and I am preparing to start this new adventure with energy and enthusiasm” commented Professor Pavan. “Our university has always been an active member of the SIE and Unimore has also contributed to the creation of industries from spin-offs created by colleagues and students”.

“In Italy and around the world we are living in a very special moment” Professor Pavan continues. COVID changed the use of electronic technologies and highlighted the importance of hardware for new product development. Europe, in particular, has recognised the great dependence on chips from the Far East or the US and is trying to promote initiatives to revive the semiconductor industry. The European Chips Act and the Italian version are the instruments that have been proposed at this time. In Italy, the Chips.it Foundation and the financing of a new Pilot Line for the production of electronic devices based on wide-bandgap semiconductors are the two main initiatives that will provide impetus for the near future”.

“The flip side of the coin is the ‘vocational crisis’ for electronics engineers, who are in great demand but few in number, even at international level” concludes Paolo Pavan. SIE implemented specific actions to improve the knowledge of electronics among the general public and the families of future students. I hope that the initiatives that are underway and those that we will activate will be able to leave a mark on the national scene.”

The Associazione Società Italiana di Elettronica (formerly Gruppo Italiano di Elettronica) is a non-profit association whose founding purposes are the promotion and development of training, research and technology transfer activities in the electronics sector. In particular, the importance of electronics in Europe and the world has become increasingly evident in recent years (www.associazione-sie.it ).

Paolo Pavan is a lecturer in electronics, full professor since 2004, currently the Rector's Delegate for Scientific Research. He has held various roles at national level (Chairman ASN Commission) and international level (Steering Committee member of international conferences). Its main focus is on semiconductor devices and electronic systems for industrial applications. He is the author of more than 200 scientific papers, books and book chapters, holds patents and was a founding partner of two spin-offs with Unimore students.
