2.58 million for competitive research projects: the new PRC 2026 call is now open

An investment of 2.58 million to strengthen scientific research, support innovative ideas, and boost Unimore's ability to compete in major national and international funding programmes. This is the goal of the new Competitive Research Projects (PRC) 2026 call for proposals, promoted by the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia and the Fondazione di Modena.
The initiative brings together 1.9 million allocated by Unimore and 680,000 provided by the Fondazione di Modena, consolidating a well-established partnership aimed at supporting research of excellence capable of generating scientific, social, and economic impacts on the local area.
The call will fund 24-month research projects, with grants of up to 55,000 each. Proposals can cover all major research macro-sectors from life sciences to mathematics and engineering, through to social sciences and humanities and will be evaluated by independent national and international experts through a procedure based exclusively on scientific quality.
The measure also aims to strengthen Unimore's competitive positioning within major research funding programmes. Project leaders of the funded initiatives will be expected to leverage their results into applications for key competitive calls, such as ERC, PRIN, FIS, FISA, and European programmes, thereby helping to increase the University's capacity to attract research funds.
Particular attention is paid to early-career researchers: at least 50% of the available resources in each macro-sector will be allocated to projects coordinated by scholars who completed their PhD or medical specialisation no more than fifteen years ago, with the aim of fostering the growth of a new generation of principal investigators.
Alongside scientific excellence, the funding line backed by the Fondazione di Modena will place special value on projects capable of producing a tangible local impact, contributing to the social, healthcare, cultural, environmental, and economic development of the Modena community, in line with the Foundation's strategic priorities.
Applications must be submitted by 17:00 on 15 September 2026 via Unimore's dedicated online platform. For clarifications and further information, please contact the Research and Third Mission Directorate - National Research Office of Unimore by emailing: ricercanazionale@unimore.it .
