DESU at the European Parliament for the international conference on the Widespread School project

Unimore’s Department of Education and Human Sciences (DESU) is set to take part in a major European event dedicated to educational innovation and the relationship between schools and communities. The DESU research unit – comprising Professor Chiara Bertolini, Professor Paola Damiani, Dr Laura Landi and Dr Erica Biagini – will attend the international conference “A Roadmap for Educational Innovation through Schools and Communities in Europe”. The event will be held at the European Parliament in Brussels tomorrow, Wednesday 27 May, from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.

Drawing on the experience of the Erasmus+ project Widespread School – Innovating Teaching Approaches Outside the Classroom , the conference will explore innovative approaches that rethink the link between schools and their local areas, promoting learning rooted in local communities and a shared responsibility for education. Central to the debate will be some of the most pressing questions facing European educational policy today: how can schools become open educational ecosystems, connected with cities, cultural institutions and public spaces? And how can education policies support learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom walls, strengthening a democratic, inclusive and community-based education?

The conference will bring together European policymakers, local and regional authorities, researchers, educators and project partners to discuss the role of schools as community hubs within local educational ecosystems, where formal and non-formal education meaningfully come together.

The event is organised by the Municipality of Reggio Emilia and the E35 Foundation as part of the Widespread School project, which has been developed alongside partners from Italy, Spain, Finland and Croatia: the Reggio Children Foundation, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia, the City of Zadar, Saunalahti School in Espoo, Escola Carme Auguet in Girona, and the University of Girona. The event is held in collaboration with the Delegation of the Emilia-Romagna Region to the European Union.
