Cooperation and Public Goods: UNIMORE at the Forefront of International Research on Contemporary Social Dilemmas

Understanding how to foster cooperation and sustainably manage public goods is one of the most
pressing challenges facing contemporary societies. These themes will be explored during the
workshop “Cooperation and Public Goods: Punishment, Corruption and Social Dynamics”,
organised by UNIMORE and MOREBEL – Unimore Behavioral and Experimental Laboratory,
scheduled for Monday 11 May 2026 in Room B.04 at the Department of Studies on Language and
Culture (Via Sant’Eufemia 19, Modena).

The event will bring together internationally renowned scholars, including two recipients of ERC
Consolidator Grants, and will provide an important opportunity to discuss the latest
developments in the economics of cooperation. Discussions will focus on social dilemmas, norms,
reputation, networks and corruption, drawing on insights from economics, computational social
science and game theory. Particular attention will be devoted to the institutional and informal
mechanisms that encourage or undermine cooperation.

Invited speakers include internationally recognised experts in the study of cooperative behaviour
and social dynamics, among them Christoph Hauert (University of British Columbia), Marco Casari
(University of Bologna), Giulia Andrighetto (CNR) and Károly Takács (Linköping University and the
Hungarian Academy of Sciences).

The workshop is organised by Simone Righi, Francesca Pancotto and Stefano Mariani as part of
the project CO-OPTION – Human Cooperation for the Sustainable Management of Public Goods
under Institutional Punishment and Corruption, funded through the UNIMORE FAR 2024
programme.

The initiative reflects UNIMORE’s ongoing commitment to research into the mechanisms that
shape cooperation between individuals and institutions. Through experimental activities,
theoretical models and international collaborations, the University contributes to the
development of tools aimed at addressing concrete challenges such as the management of shared
resources, the prevention of corruption and the strengthening of trust in institutions.
The event also provides an opportunity to showcase the University’s interdisciplinary expertise
and the work of its experimental economics laboratories, which are playing an increasingly
important role in the study of collective behaviour and public policy.

The workshop is open to the public upon registration.
