Formula Student: the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia’s MoRe Modena Racing team tops the world rankings

Following the latest update to the official Formula Student World Ranking ( www.fs-world.org ), released in recent days, the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia’s MoRe Modena Racing team has officially secured overall first place worldwide in the category for hybrid and internal combustion vehicles.

This historic achievement marks the culmination of the 2024 and 2025 seasons, during which the Unimore team delivered outstanding performances, excelling and dominating at some of Europe’s most prestigious events.

The team’s rise to the top of the global standings was driven by an exceptional 2024 season, with three wins out of three races in Austria, Croatia and Italy. The recently concluded 2025 season confirmed the extremely high standard reached, with a second-place finish in Austria, fourth place in Croatia and victory at the home event in Varano de’ Melegari.

Particular mention must be made of the result achieved at this final event: with a score of 987 points out of 1,000, MoRe Modena Racing not only won the Italian competition but also set an outright world record for the highest number of points ever scored at a single Formula Student event. This record was accompanied by an unprecedented feat in the dynamic disciplines, where the team triumphed in all five on-track tests, setting a further world record for points in the dynamic events.

The 2026 season promises to be even more ambitious and challenging. In May, the team will embark on a historic overseas campaign: with the support of MUNER – MotorValley University of Emilia-Romagna, the Unimore car will compete for the first time in the United States at Formula SAE Michigan, held at the Michigan International Speedway.

This event has particular historical significance, as it was here that the first Formula SAE competition in the world was organised back in 1981, well before the format was introduced to Europe in 2002 at the Silverstone Circuit. It will be an extremely demanding and thrilling test: the MoRe Modena Racing team will be called upon to defend their world leadership on American soil against more than 130 teams from leading North American universities and from around the world. The season will then continue in July at the iconic Silverstone Circuit in the United Kingdom, closing an ideal circle between the two temples of student motorsport.

Becoming the global benchmark in Formula Student demonstrates how our educational model, based on the principle of ‘Learning by Doing’, has reached an exceptionally high level, which is directly reflected in the quality of our students’ training,” said the project’s Faculty Advisors, Professor Matteo Giacopini and Professor Valerio Mangeruga. “Now an almost even tougher challenge begins: maintaining this level of excellence. The legacy left by the 2025 team members to the new recruits is the defence of a world title.”

“Together with the other departments involved in the project,” continued Professor Francesco Leali, Director of the ‘Enzo Ferrari’ Department of Engineering, “we celebrate this important recognition, which is the result of the skills, commitment and passion of students, academic staff, researchers and lecturers. Innovation and quality in education mean finding a new balance between knowledge and practical skills, between theory and practice, between the virtualisation of activities and the sharing of spaces, experiences and life itself: Formula SAE embodies all of this. However outstanding they may be, and however much satisfaction they bring us, these results represent only a small part of our overall objectives.”

The Rector of Unimore, Professor Rita Cucchiara, added: “Our University boasts scientific and applied excellence that enhances the strong tradition and innovative capacity of our region across many disciplines: from engineering to medicine, from artificial intelligence to education sciences, from economics to the life sciences. The aim of this University, which has just surpassed 850 years of history, is to continue with even greater determination along the path of international engagement and the promotion of its most innovative research.”

The commitment of the MoRe Modena Racing team does not end with the development of the hybrid car that led to these achievements. In the University’s laboratories, a second prototype will be developed in 2026, powered by a fully electric drivetrain and equipped with an autonomous driving system. The goal is to take to the track in September at the home event in Varano de’ Melegari, ready to pursue excellence through these new technologies as well.
