Unimore: A November Filled with Initiatives to Raise Awareness Against Gender-based Violence

Once again, Unimore plays a leading role with a wide range of initiatives supporting the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Many events will take place across November, all dedicated to preventing and countering gender-based violence. In particular, five events are scheduled for the week from 24 November to 1 December.

As the Delegate for Equal Opportunities,” states Professor Elena Bassoli of Unimore, “I am proud that our University reaffirms its strong commitment to initiatives that not only combat gender-based violence but also help build a culture of respect and inclusion. Prevention comes through education, awareness, and the creation of safe spaces for all members of our community, recognising different vulnerabilities and identities. Our commitment is tangible: listening services, training programmes, and cultural events aimed at countering all forms of abuse.”

The first event, taking place on Wednesday 26 November, is open to all Unimore students, who are invited to attend the dress rehearsal of Giacomo Puccini’s opera Tosca at the Pavarotti–Freni Theatre in Modena. This initiative, organised by Unimore and the Municipal Theatre, aims to raise students’ awareness by encouraging reflection on issues of power abuse, coercion, and violence through the story of the opera’s protagonist. At 2 p.m., before the performance begins, the University’s Delegate for Equal Opportunities, Professor Elena Bassoli, will introduce the initiative by explaining the reasons behind the choice of this theatrical event as an educational opportunity for the student community. Tosca addresses themes which, regrettably, remain painfully relevant. During the introductory session, the University will also present the measures it has implemented to prevent and tackle gender-based violence, with particular reference to the recent opening of two anti-violence support centres located in Modena and Reggio Emilia, offering dedicated services for support and listening within the University community.

The second event, organised by CRID and scheduled for Wednesday 26 November at 3:45 p.m. in Room A of the Department of Law (via San Geminiano 3) in Modena, will focus on “Social Networks and Gender-based Violence: Imagery, Narratives, Contraindications”, with particular attention to TikTok as an environment widely used by younger generations.

The third event, itled “Training as a Tool for Preventing and Combating Gender-based Violence Against Women”, will take place on Friday 28 November 2025 at 11 a.m. in the Aula Magna of the Department of Law (via San Geminiano 3) in Modena, and will centre on the White Paper on Training on Male Violence Against Women.

The meeting will be opened by the Rector of Unimore, Professor Rita Cucchiara, and the Delegate for Equal Opportunities, Professor Elena Bassoli, who will discuss the topic together with the editors of the volume—Vittoria Doretti, Fabrizia Giuliani, and Claudia Segre—members of the Technical-Scientific Committee of the Observatory on Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence under the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. The event, coordinated by Professor Cecilia Robustelli of Unimore, will also feature contributions from former Public Prosecutor at the Tivoli Prosecutor’s Office, Francesco Menditto, and the Director of the Department of Law, Giovanna Laura De Fazio.

The fourth event, scheduled for Saturday 29 November 2025 at 9 p.m. at the Beccaria Auditorium (via Razzaboni 80) in Modena, will be a conference-concert organised by the Institute of Legal Medicine of Unimore, the Modena Municipal Band “A. Ferri”, and the “Sigonio” Music High School of Modena. The Director of the Institute of Legal Medicine, Professor Rossana Cecchi, will open the evening with a lecture exploring the dynamics of domestic violence, identifying warning signs, highlighting the role of support networks, and promoting a culture of respect, equality, and the protection of individuals.

The fifth event will take place on Monday 1 December 2025 at the Enzo Ferrari Department of Engineering, where the first red bench of the department—and the third within the University—will be installed. DIEF will also organise a series of additional meetings on the topic of gender equality within businesses and technological sectors.
