Unimore welcomed Professor Nathan Dean Nielsen, an international expert in intensive care, as a Visiting Professor

In October, Unimore welcomed Professor Nathan Dean Nielsen, Full Professor at the University of Albuquerque (New Mexico, USA) and a recognised international expert in intensive care medicine, particularly in the management of coagulation and sepsis, as part of a teaching programme under his appointment as Visiting Professor.

The initiative was organised in collaboration with Professor Massimo Girardis and Professor Stefano Busani from Unimore’s Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences (CHIMOMO), further strengthening an important scientific and educational partnership at the international level.

During his stay, Professor Nielsen delivered seminars, lectures and acted as tutor in advanced medical simulation sessions addressed to students of the Degree Programme in Medicine and Surgery, the Degree Programme in Nursing, and to resident doctors from the School of Specialisation in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care. The training activities provided an in-depth exploration of the management of patients with haemorrhagic shock, the care of critically ill patients with coagulopathy, and the clinical and decision-making approaches to patients with cardio-respiratory instability. These topics, highly relevant in clinical practice and critical care medicine, offered participants the opportunity to engage with experiences and protocols applied in U.S. hospital settings.

The initiative was met with strong participation and great interest from students, residents and faculty members, highlighting its educational and scientific value. The activities promoted meaningful clinical and scientific insights and fostered a productive cultural and professional exchange.

“Professor Nielsen’s teaching activity represents a significant contribution to the internationalisation of Unimore’s education and research, and stands as evidence of the CHIMOMO Department’s commitment to promoting high-quality training and collaboration with leading academic institutions worldwide,”   commented Professor Girardis.
