A Palestinian Student Welcomed at Unimore within the Framework of the IUPALS Programme – Italian Universities for Palestinian Students

Nada Ayman Abu Khubaiza, a young Palestinian student selected within the IUPALS – Italian Universities for Palestinian Students – programme, a national initiative promoted by CRUI in collaboration with the Ministry of Universities and Research and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, arrived in Italy on the evening of 23 October.

Unimore’s participation in the IUPALS programme is part of the University’s broader engagement within RUniPace – the University Network for Peace – promoted by CRUI, which Unimore has been a member of since 2021. The University’s commitment to peace and the protection of human rights has for years been reflected in its international academic cooperation activities, which promote initiatives aimed at supporting students and scholars in situations of vulnerability and at enhancing the role of the university as a space for encounter between peoples and cultures.

Winner of the scholarship funded by Unimore as part of the “Educating for Peace” project, approved by the Board of Administration in June 2024, Nada Ayman Abu Khubaiza will attend the Bachelor’s Degree Programme in Computer Engineering at the Mantua campus. At Milan Linate Airport she was welcomed by Maria Chiara Rioli, lecturer in the Department of Linguistic and Cultural Studies, and by Giacomo Guaraldi, Chair of the Technical and Administrative Staff Council of Unimore, who accompanied her to Modena. In the morning she was received by the Rector of Unimore, Professor Carlo Adolfo Porro, together with the Delegate for Internationalisation, Professor Alessandro Capra, the Delegate for Communication and Unimore co-representative for RUniPace, Professor Thomas Casadei, and other members of the academic community.

After the institutional meeting, the student travelled to Mantua, where she will be hosted at the UniverMN university residence, thanks to the collaboration with Er.Go and the UniverMantova Foundation . Her welcome and support in the local area will be overseen by Professor Claudia Canali, in coordination with the Department of Welfare of the Municipality of Mantua, which has activated support channels through the SAI Service and a local network for cultural mediation.

“Meeting Nada was deeply moving,” said Rector Professor Carlo Adolfo Porro. “Behind a journey such as hers there is certainly suffering, great courage, but also trust in a place that can offer a new opportunity. The university also serves this purpose: to open up spaces of life where previously there was only uncertainty. Nada brings with her a difficult story and a strength that concerns us all. Welcoming her reminds us that knowledge knows no borders and that peace is also built in this way – by welcoming those who choose to study, to start anew, and to believe once again in the future through education.”

The arrival of IUPALS students in Italy has been made possible thanks to the joint commitment of numerous bodies and institutions, including the Civil Protection Department, the Guardia di Finanza, the Crisis Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Consulate General of Italy in Jerusalem, the Embassy of Italy in Jordan, the Scuole di Terrasanta and the Giovanni Paolo II Foundation.
