Palestinian Children and Youth Choir to Perform at Modena’s Teatro Storchi

The choir consists of 55 members, aged between 8 and 18, who live in Palestine and sing in the girls’ and boys’ choir Amwaj (Arabic for “waves”). On Sunday 28 September at 6.00 p.m., they will perform in concert at the Teatro Storchi in Modena. Admission is free until seats are filled, though advance booking is recommended.

The Amwaj Choir’s performance is organised by the Interdepartmental Research Centre on Digital Humanities (DHMoRe) at Unimore, in collaboration with Emilia-Romagna Teatro ERT / Teatro Nazionale. The event forms part of the PNRR JERUS-IT-ARTS project, which aims to support the internationalisation of Italy’s higher education system in the arts, music and dance, as well as its universities.

“JERUS-IT-ARTS aims to connect Italy and Palestine through art, music and dance,” says project co-coordinator Maria Chiara Rioli, Associate Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. “By sharing teaching programmes, fostering artistic research and digitising cultural heritage, the project creates new networks between institutions, archives and artists.”

Led by the Conservatorio “A. Pedrollo” in Vicenza, the initiative also involves Unimore, the Conservatorio of Bologna, the Claudio Abbado Civic School of Music in Milan, the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera, and the National Academy of Dance in Rome, with additional international partners including the Franciscan Custody of the Holy Land and research centres across Europe and the United States.

Founded in 2015 by musicians Mathilde Vittu and Michele Cantoni, Amwaj provides children and young people from Bethlehem and Hebron with free, high-level choral training. The programme emphasises inclusion, multilingualism and artistic excellence.

“Amwaj carries deep social and political significance, particularly at a time marked by the devastation of Gaza and the ongoing military occupation of the West Bank and East Jerusalem,” Rioli adds. “Through this concert in Modena, followed by a second performance in Vicenza on Tuesday 30 September, we want to highlight a rich cultural and human heritage now under threat.”

The 55 young singers will arrive in Modena on Saturday 27 September and will be welcomed into the homes of around 40 local families for the weekend. Hosting families will have the chance to hear directly from those living through the conflict in the Middle East, who travel the world to share a message of justice and hope through their art and music.
