IWES 2025: The Tenth Edition of the Italian Workshop on Embedded Systems Comes to Modena

The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia will host the tenth edition of the Italian Workshop on Embedded Systems (IWES) on 18–19 September. IWES has become a national benchmark for dialogue between academia and industry in the field of embedded systems.

This year’s programme features keynote speeches by international experts – including Marco Demi (Resiltech) and Luca Benini (University of Bologna, ETH Zurich) – along with contributions from leading companies such as Bylogix, Accelerat, Minerva Systems, Green Hills Software, and Huawei.

New for 2025: the first PhD School of the CINI Laboratory on Embedded Systems and Smart Manufacturing (ESSM-CINI), aimed at early-career researchers. The programme will include scientific sessions on automotive, robotics, real-time systems, edge AI, security and verification, as well as networking opportunities and meetings with industry representatives.

IWES 2025 is organised by Dr Paolo Burgio and Dr Alessandro Capotondi (Department of Physics, Informatics and Mathematics – UniMoRe) together with Professor Toni Mancini (Sapienza University of Rome), in collaboration with the High Performance Real-Time Lab, the European Association for the Advancement of Science and Technology, and the CINI ESSM Lab.

“The Italian Workshop on Embedded Systems is the leading national event bringing together academic researchers and industry players. Embedded systems are, in fact, the technological backbone of the Internet of Things, and the recent boom in AI technologies cannot be separated from them. Thanks to the work of Unimore researchers, our University is at the forefront in this field, and we have world-renowned professors and researchers working on Industry 4.0, automotive and autonomous driving, collaborative robotics, smart cities, biomedical applications – to name just a few. We are truly delighted to host IWES here.” – said Paolo Burgio.

“IWES has now reached its tenth edition, and it is an honour to have been chosen to host this milestone event. The programme includes technical sessions on various topics from the embedded world, two keynote talks with leading Italian and international guests, a poster session for PhD students, and several demonstration stands. In addition, during the same days we will host the summer school for PhD students organised by CINI. A highlight of the event will be the session where top industry players meet our students, giving them the chance to experience the latest developments in embedded systems first-hand and to start thinking about their post-graduation career paths.” – added Dr Capotondi.

The IWES 2025 programme also includes a session dedicated to undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students in Computer Science, Computer, Electronic, Electrical, Automation, and Telecommunications Engineering, as well as related disciplines.

This free-to-attend session offers a unique opportunity for career guidance and direct interaction with companies working in embedded and intelligent systems – from automotive to aerospace, including mission- and safety-critical applications.

During the session, companies will present current industrial challenges and available career paths for young graduates and doctoral candidates. Participating organisations include Bylogix, Accelerat, Green Hills Software, ResilTech, and Minerva Systems.
