Final Conference of the “ALIMENTA” Project at the Department of Law on 11 April

The Department of Law (Aula Magna) will host the final conference of the research project “ALIMENTA – Agrifood and Health Protection: Managing Risks in Small and Medium-sized Food Enterprises in Modena”, starting at 9:00 am on Friday 11 April. The project, coordinated by Professor Francesco Diamanti, addresses agrifood and health protection, with a specific focus on risk management in local SMEs.

The conference has been organised with the support of the 2023 Unimore University Research Fund (FAR), under the FOMO Line for the funding of interdisciplinary research activities, and it forms part of the specialist training activities for the Doctoral School in Legal Sciences.

In the first session, Professor Francesco Diamanti, Director of the Interdepartmental Research Centre for Food Safety (CRISA), will present the ALIMENTA research project. The findings of the study will be presented by Dr Samuel Bolis, criminal lawyer, PhD, and currently Research Fellow in Criminal Law at Unimore. The research team also includes Professors Andrea Pulvirenti, Ludovico Bin, Isabella Morlini, Ennio Lugli, as well as Dr Federica Raffone and Dr Federico Bertacchini.

The second session of the conference, dedicated to so-called "health-related" food fraud, will be chaired by Professor Francesco Diamanti and will feature the following speakers: Dr Antonio Iaderosa from MASAF, Director of ICQRF for Emilia-Romagna and Marche; Major Domenico Guerra, Commander of the NAS (Anti-Adulteration Unit) in Parma; Professor Giuseppe Rotolo from the University of Salento; Professor Antonella Madeo from the University of Genoa; and Professor Luca Tumminello from the University of Palermo.

The third and final session, dedicated to so-called "commercial" food fraud, will be chaired by Professor Luigi Foffani and Professor Ludovico Bin. Speakers will include: General Daniel Melis from the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of the Agrifood Sector; Dr Aldo Natalini, Judge at the Italian Supreme Court – Office of the Massimario; Professor Emanuele Birritteri from the University of Rome Unitelma-Sapienza; and Professor Edoardo Mazzanti from the University of Macerata.

“This conference,” commented Professor Francesco Diamanti, Director of CRISA, “is part of a broader project that many colleagues across Italy have been working on for years: building a university capable of having a tangible impact on the country’s productive development. The Italian enterprise of the future must be born in synergy with the university, leveraging its know-how, its personnel, its innovation. Without this collaboration, it will not be able to compete on a global scale. On this path, Law Departments will also play a central role, because regulatory compliance within the business context will be a strategic factor: every company, from multinationals to start-ups, will have to address national and European regulatory compliance. Being ‘compliant’ is no longer an option – it is already an essential condition for operating effectively in the market. On behalf of all the members of CRISA and the ALIMENTA research team, we are truly honoured to be able to contribute, in our own small way, to the celebrations of the 850th anniversary of our University.”
