Modena hosts the 23rd Chemistry Day in Emilia-Romagna on 19 December

The Fondazione Marco Biagi hosts the 23rd edition of the Emilia Romagna Chemistry Day on Thursday 19 December, a free initiative organised by the Emilia Romagna Section of the Italian Chemical Society (SCI-ER), with the patronage of Unimore, the support of the Modena Foundation and the sponsorship of 14 companies in the Emilia-Romagna region.

The theme of the day, which will be attended by more than 200 people, is “Chemistry for the Challenges of the Future”, chosen by the SCI-ER board to provide an opportunity to discuss together the role chemistry can play in realising a fairer and more sustainable future for all. Four invited speakers from local companies and universities will take part in the day, bringing first-hand accounts of how the chemical sciences can help make our passage on planet Earth more sustainable. The day will also see the participation of PhD students from all the universities in the region, as well as assignees, researchers and lecturers, and professionals working in companies in the sector.

The morning will open with 10 flash communications by PhD students and will end with a plenary lecture by Professor Fabrizio Cavani, from the University of Bologna, entitled “From idea to process: bio-alcohols for the development of the bio-refinery concept” and by Antonio Ricci, from Fresenius Kabi, a well-known biomedical company, with a speech entitled “Challenges and sustainability on API industrial manufacturing processes”. During the lunch break, the poster session will take place, during which it will be possible to view the contributions exhibited with over 100 posters and discuss them with their authors.

The afternoon will feature the four PhD students selected for the 20-minute oral presentations and two other invited speakers: Professor Alessia Bacchi, from the University of Parma, with a plenary lecture entitled “The crystal ball: chemistry notes for the third millennium” and Mirko Buffagni, from Graf Industries, a company with roots in the Modena area, with a speech entitled “When chemistry meets art: 3D PVC decorations”. The day will end with awards for the best posters and communications.

"We welcomed with great enthusiasm the appointment of the President of the Italian Chemical Society Section Emilia Romagna (SCI-ER), Prof. Rita Mazzoni, to organise the XXIII edition of the Emilia Romagna Chemistry Day (XXIII GdC-ER 2024) in Modena, thanks to the joint efforts of the Departments of Chemical and Geological Sciences and Life Sciences, under the patronage of Unimore. This event, which is completely free of charge, will bring together in Modena doctoral students and researchers in the chemical disciplines from all over the Emilia Romagna region, belonging to both the academic and industrial worlds, and constitutes a valuable opportunity to reflect together on the challenges that the future will impose on us,” comment Professors Luca Rigamonti and Silvia Franchini, respectively chair and co-chair of the conference.

Along with Prof. Luca Rigamonti and Prof. Silvia Franchini, the organising committee includes numerous other Unimore professors and researchers: Prof. Gianantonio Battistuzzi, Valentina Nicolini, Stefano Raimondi, Claudia Sorbi, Paolo Zardi, all belonging to the Departments of Chemical and Geological Sciences and Life Sciences.
