Unimore takes to the track at the 22nd F1TENTH Grand Prix

Unimore is among the organisers and participants of the 22nd F1TENTH Grand Prix, a 1:10 scale competition between autonomous driving racing cars involving universities from all over the world scheduled to take place in Milan from 16 to 19 December.
The Unimore team consists of: Simone Bondi and Antonio Russo, MSc Computer Science students, Nicola Musiu and Alessandro Toschi PhD students at the Department of Physical, Computer and Mathematical Sciences - FIM and Ayoub Raji, research fellow at FIM.
The organisers of the race are: Federico Gavioli, Unimore FIM PhD student, Francesco Moretti, Unimore/Muner (Motorvehicle University of Emilia Romagna) PhD student, Enrico Mannocci, Unibo PhD student and Ahmad Amine, University of Pennsylvania PhD student.
Each team starts with the same basic car and makes the software for their own car. In the qualifying session, teams compete in a time trial in which they must prove that they are able to complete as many laps as possible in the shortest time while avoiding collisions with the edges of the track.
Next, the teams compete in a knockout phase, initially 1-on-1, and later, for the first time, together in groups of 3 or 4. Since the vehicles and hardware are by regulation the same for all teams, the students challenge themselves by developing the best perception, planning and control algorithms that can adapt to a track that is not known in advance, with other vehicles around.
"Project F1/10 (F1tenth) started in 2015 at the University of Pennsylvania as an advanced laboratory for students to put autonomous driving-related technologies into practice. In 2017, it was brought to Europe, thanks to us at Unimore. To date, the project has evolved into a full-fledged research platform on which scholars from all over the world challenge and confront each other to test innovative solutions in a controlled environment. Competitions are held bi/quarterly around the world, and the goal is to have at least one per year in Italy. We are trying to organise the 2025 edition in Unimore's own facilities. At our university, F1/10 is part of a broader work plan on autonomous driving, which also includes Formula Student (Learn By Doing programme), Indy Autonomous Challenge, and Abu Dhabi Racing League. For each of these four projects, we have a fully functioning and highly competitive prototype, commented Paolo Burgio, researcher at the Department of Physical, Computer and Mathematical Sciences and F1/10 Italy manager.
