8.6 million MUR co-financing to Unimore for the new student residences of Bonacorsa and San Barnaba

Over 8 million euros have been allocated by MUR for the construction of two new student residences in the heart of Modena's historic city centre, as part of the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia's project to develop student residences. This impressive investment is part of the 5th call provided for by Law 338/2000 on university housing of the Ministry of University and Research.

The two new student residences, located in via Bonacorsa and via San Barnaba, will add a total of 106 new beds to the housing capacity of Unimore's Modena headquarters, with 70 places in the Bonacorsa residence and 36 in the San Barnaba residence. Their location in the historic center of Modena is part of an urban context of great historical and cultural value and will contribute to the regeneration and enhancement of the Sant'Eufemia area.

The project, included among the actions envisaged in the University's 2023-2025 Three-Year Plan, includes a total investment of more than 16 million euro, with state co-financing amounting to more than 8.6 million euro, and a regional contribution of 233 thousand euro. The Municipality of Modena, in agreement with Unimore, has granted free use for thirty-five years of two of the buildings involved, which will be redeveloped and transformed into modern residences, equipped with common services such as a reading room, laundry and dining facilities, while respecting their historical and architectural value.

"I welcome with great enthusiasm the news of the funding obtained for the Bonacorsa and San Barnaba projects," comments Unimore's Magnificent Rector, Prof. Carlo Adolfo Porro. “This important milestone represents a significant acievement for our institution and for the academic community of Unimore. The new student halls of residence, in addition to meeting the growing demand for housing, represent our vision of a university integrated into the urban and cultural context of the city. In fact, the choice to locate them in the historic centre of Modena is not accidental, but reflects our desire to create a stronger link between the students and city life, in order to enrich them in this way in their educational and social experience.”

"The approval of this project," says the Rector, "is a clear sign of the appreciation and value of Unimore's contribution not only in the academic sphere, but also in the social and economic life of the region. It is a commitment that involves us playing an active role in urban regeneration and in supporting study. "I would like to take this opportunity," concludes the Rector, "to thank all the partners involved in this project; I am certain that the construction of the new residences will live up to the expectations of all our students, lecturers and technical-administrative staff."

The construction of the Bonacorsa and San Barnaba student halls of residence is part of a broader strategy to develop residential facilities for off-campus students nationwide. The total funding of around EUR 500 million, allocated by the Ministry of University and Research, is aimed at the creation, renovation and expansion of residential facilities throughout Italy, with the goal of tripling the number of beds available for off-campus students.

Through this project, Unimore confirms its commitment to the ongoing improvement of study and living conditions for students, providing a significant contribution to the quality and accessibility of university training.
