Open access obligations in major funding calls at International, European and Italian level

Within the great cultural movement that goes by the name of Open Science, the theme of Open Access (OA) plays a prominent role. In fact, the scientific community has highlighted the need to guarantee free and open online access to scientific information, with a view to equity, progress and dissemination of knowledge. The Plan S initiative, launched in 2018 by cOAlition S, an informal, international consortium of entities funding or conducting research, stipulates that all scientific publications on research results funded by public or private funds allocated by national, regional and international research councils and other funding bodies must be published in OA journals or platforms, or made immediately available through OA repositories without embargo. This article explains the European and Italian situation with respect to Open Access with a brief reference to IRIS UNIMORE on green OA. There are some substantial differences between the Italian and international realities, but there is an increasing focus on open access to the results of scientific research, for the benefit of science, the international scientific community and all citizens.
